New records of snakes

We provide the first country record of Opisthotropis durandi Teynié, Lottier, David, Nguyen & Vogel, 2014 from Vietnam based on a single snake specimen from Dien Bien Province. The species previously was only known from the Lao People’s Democratic Republic (Laos). DNA sequence data of a male specimen from Vietnam match those of a specimen of O. durandi from Phongsali province, Laos, and the newly collected individual from Vietnam also corresponds to O. durandi in terms of diagnostic morphological features, except for a slightly higher ventral number (185 versus 177−181).

Green rat snake Ptyas nigromarginata (Blyth, 1854) was originally described from Northeastern India. The species is known in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Bhutan, China, Thailand to Vietnam. In Vietnam, the Green rat snake Ptyas nigromarginata is a poorly known species with few records from Lao Cai, Lang Son, Hanoi and Kon Tum provinces.

In Son La Province, Nguyen, Ho and Nguyen (2009) documented a total of 38 species of snakes. Pham et al. (2013) recently recorded five species of colubrids and one species of viper for the first time from Son La Province. In recent herpetological surveys, we recorded six snakes comprising two species of Culubridae (Amphiesma stolatum, Hebius leucomystax), two species of Homalopsidae (Enhydris enhydris, E. subtaeniata), one species of Pareatidae (Pareas hamptoni), and one species of Xenopeltida (Xenopeltis unicolor) for the first time in Binh Dinh province, central-southern Vietnam. In addition, an updated list of 26 snake species from Binh Dinh province contains species of conservation concern including 6 species listed in the Governmental Decree No.

Several scientific studies are in progress using modern scientific tools based on the lead from the folkloric and herbal uses for formulating new western medicine. The present study involves the identification, enumeration and utilization of medicinal flora among the Irula tribes of Kancheepuram district of Tamil Nadu and a record of the endangered medicinal plants in the study area. A total number of 30 respondents of three villages, viz., Chenneri, Orathur and Kunavakkam-Kollamedu were selected by purposive random sampling.

We report six new records of snakes from Thanh Hoa province based on newly collected specimens from Xuan Lien Nature Reserve, comprising three species of Colubridae (Lycodon futsingensis, L. meridionalis and Oreocryptophis porphyraceus), two species of Natricidae (Hebius boulengeri and Parahelicops annamensis), and one species of Elapidae (Bungarus slowinskii).

Based on a new reptile collection from Huu Lien Nature Reserve, Lang Son Province we added six new records of snakes found in the nature reserve, viz., Ahaetulla prasina, Boiga kraepelini, Chrysopelea ornata, Lycodon fasciatus, Oligodon chinensis, and Sinomicrurus macclellandi. Our findings increased the species number of snakes to 21 in Huu Lien Nature Reserve and 49 in Lang Son Province.

Based on recently herpetological collection from Sin Ho forest between 2017 to 2018, we herein report five new records of snakes from Lai Chau Province, comprising Dendrelaphis pictus (Colubridae), Bungarus multicinctus (Elapidae), Hebius chapaensis (Natricidae), Pareas carinatus (Pareatidae), and Ovophis monticola (Viperidae). Our findings brought the total number of snakes species recorded from Lai Chau province up to 26. We also provide additional information about morphology and natural history of the afore mentioned species.

Based on a new herpetological collection from Muong Nhe Nature Reserve we added 13 new provincial records of snakes found in Dien Bien province, viz., Boiga cyanea, Dendrelaphis ngansonensis, Gonysoma prasinum, Lycodon futsingensis, Oligodon fasciolatus, Oreocryptophis porphyraceus, Rhabdophis nuchalis, R. subminiatus, Psammodynastes pulverulentus, Pareas carinatus, P. hamptoni, Pseudoxenodon macrops and Ovophis monticola. Our findings increase the species number of snakes to 46 in Dien Bien province.
