Nigella (Nigella sativa L.) has been widely acknowledged for its immense medicinal properties in different medicinal systems. Recognizing the importance of the crop as a potential component in crop diversification in Coastal Humid Tropic of India, a systematic study on the effect of date of sowing and plant densities on growth, yield and quality of nigella was under taken during winter growing season (rabi).

A field experiment entitled “studies on sources and levels of organic manures on yield, yield attributes and quality of black cumin” was conducted at RIOF, UAS, GKVK, Bengaluru during rabi 2017. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with 12 treatments replicated thrice and the cultivar used was Ajmer Kalonji-1. Results revealed that application of 125 per cent N equivalent through vermicompost recorded significantly higher seed yield and fixed oil yield (723 and 261 kg ha-1, respectively). This was attributed mainly by enhanced yield attributes like days to 50 per cent flowering (52.

A field experiment was conducted during rabi season 2017-18 at the Research Farm, College of Horticulture, Mandsaur (Madhya Pradesh) to find out the effect of sowing time and plant geometry on growth, yield and quality of black cumin (Nigella sativa L.) under Malwa plateau condition. The experiment was laid out in factorial RBD design with three replications including four sowing time and three plant geometry. The different treatments significantly influenced the growth, yield and quality attributes of black cumin.

Nigella (Nigella sativa L.) is an important seed spice crop having high medicinal importance. Genetic variability, correlation and path analysis was carried out in thirteen nigella genotypes to work out the magnitude of variability for yield and yield contributing traits and also to understand the mutual relationship among the characters. The results revealed that primary and secondary branches per plant, seeds per plant, capsules per plant and biological yield per plant are important yield contributing traits having high heritability as well as strong correlation with seed yield.

The present work was carried out to evaluate the removal of Coomassie brilliant blue dye by adsorption onto a magnetized activated carbon nanocomposite (MNSA) prepared from Nigella sativa L. (NS) waste. Different techniques, including infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption, were used to characterize MNSA to investigate its adsorption properties. Adsorption experiments were carried out by simultaneously optimizing four variables that usually present a strong effect in adsorption studies.

The N fed plants showed a significant enhancement of capsule number and seed yield plant-1, and nitrate reductase activity, as well as protein and oil yields plant-1, especially upon application of 352 mg N pot-1. Moreover, the effect of basal N was further potentiated following an additional treatment with various GA3 concentrations.

Terminalia chebula, Salvia officinalis L., Calamintha incana, Thymus vulgaris L., Matricaria chamomilla, and Nigella sativa are commonly used spices. In the present study the methanolic extracts of these spices were evaluated for their antioxidant activity by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazyl (DPPH) free radical scavenging method.
