The present investigation was undertaken to estimate the extent of heterosis for yield and its quantitative traits in crosses of G. hirsutum. For this purpose, two hybrids were developed by using four parents during kharif 2014. These hybrids along with four parents were planted in kharif 2015.

Eight parental lines of okra and their 28 F1 hybrids obtained from half diallel were studied to identify the good general and specific combiners for yield and quality parameters. Both general a combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) variances were highly significant for all the characters indicating the importance of both additive and nonadditive gene actions.

Six genotypes as lines and two genotypes as testers of ricebean were studies in line x tester analysis. The study revealed that the gene action involved in controlling characters namely, days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, branches per plant, pods per plant, clusters per plant, pods per cluster, seeds per pod and yield per plant was nonadditive gene action while two traits namely, 100-seed weight and pod length was under the control of additive gene action.

Eight high yielding rice genotypes along with their twenty eight crosses which effected in a diallel fashion excluding reciprocals were subjected to combining ability which aimed at elucidating the genetic system underlying the inheritance of yield and quality traits. The study revealed predominance of non-additive gene action for most of the yield components and quality traits except straw yield/plant, which was under the control of additive gene action.

The present investigation were carried out understand heterosis and gene action for yield and quality traits in cucumber genotypes. The materials consist of three lines and four testers and the resultant 12 hybrids through Line x Tester mating design. The present estimation of heterosis identified that L2XT2 (Koradacherry local x Orathanadu local) being the superior hybrid for most of the traits by expressing higher significance Relative Heterosis, Heterobeltiosis and Standard Heterosis.

An 8 x 8 diallel cross mating design with the parents and F1s was used to estimate gene action and combining ability for yield and yield attributing traits in sesame (Sesamum indicum L.). Combing ability analysis revealed predominance of nonadditive gene action for all traits viz,. days 50% flowering, days to maturity, plant height, number of branches per plant, number of capsules per plant, length of capsule, width of capsule, 1000 seed weight, yield per plant and oil content which can be improved by bi-parental mating or reciprocal recurrent selection.

Combining ability analysis, using Line x Tester mating design was conducted in safflower to select best material for further breeding programme and generation advancement on the basis of general and specific combining ability of the divergent parents and their crosses, respectively. Two CMS lines as female parents, 20 male parents and 40 crosses along with three checks (PKV PINK, AKS 207 and PBNS 12) were evaluated in Randomized Complete Block Design for seed yield under aphid infestation, Aphid Infestation Index (AII), total phenol and chlorophyll content.

The estimates of components of genetic variation in okra revealed that additive component ( D ˆ ) was significant for all traits i.e. days to first flowering, days to first pod picking, plant height, number of nodes, internodal length, pod length, pod girth, avg. pod weight, number of pods per plant, pod yield per plant (g), number of seeds per pod, 100 seed weight (g), seed yield per plant (g) and pod yield (t/ha).

Studies on genetic variability, heritability and genetic advance were carried out among 15 genotypes of chrysanthemum for characters to identify genotypes to be used in breeding programme. High PCV and GCV was recorded in fresh flower weight (GCV %: 69.92, PCV%: 70.25) indicate the existence of wide range of genetic variability and hence there is a good scope for the improvement of these characters through selection.
