In this study, three-dimensional crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) simulations of the nanoindentation test on zinc single crystal have been implemented in the finite element code Abaqus using a user material subroutine. The basics of deformation mechanisms of zinc, nanoindentation test and crystal plasticity theory will be presented.

This thesis investigates the SPH capability available in the commercial Finite Element (FE) code LS-DYNA®, for water impact problems. Experiments have been conducted on rigid wedges impacting water, which were then simulated with the SPH method. Although certain limitations were experienced with the experimental results, a positive correlation was observed with the numerical technique, thus establishing SPH as a promising method for crashworthiness design.

Although empirical methods have been introduced in the process development of continuous chromatography, the common approach to optimize a multi-column continuous capture chromatography (periodic counter-current chromatography, PCCC) process heavily relies on numerical model simulations and the number of experiments.

The paper compares the simulation and experiment results of the lubricating oil temperature in the connecting-rod big end bearing. Simulating hydrodynamic lubrication for the connecting-rod big end bearing based on solving Reynolds equations, oil film thickness equations, load balancing equations and energy equations combined numerical lubrication simulation for the bearing by modeling thermal problems for oil films using finite element method.

Gate location is the position where melt plastic flow was directly injected into the mold cavity for the product formation purpose. This paper demonstrates a numerical simulation experiment method to find an optimal gate location for the plastic injection molding to reduce defects and enhance the product quality.

Polymer quenchants based on polyalkylene glycols (PAG) are currently the most widely used type of aqueous quenchants. In this paper, the numerical simulation method by Sysweld software was used to predict the distortions of C-ring model using 100Cr6 steel when quenched in the difference media. The simulation results are in good agreement with the experimental values, and they also showed that the top of C-ring was opened after deformation.

In order to better evaluate the applicability of the inverse analysis method for calculation and evaluation of hydraulic properties of unsaturated soil in more realistic conditions, a transient one – step outflow experiment for layered sands was applied in the desaturation process with the purpose to attain the profiles of suction, saturation and flow rate with time. In this study, the fine sand and medium sand were used with the same thickness of 40cm for each layer.

In the field of rock mechanics, underground construction and mining, there have been many proposed methods for studying geo-hazards and also many research results that have been published in the world. In Vietnam, the numerical method is mainly used for analysis and design but not going deeply to predict the possible causes that lead to geo-hazards due to complex geological conditions. On the other hand, underground constructions and exploitation projects are often designed based on standards, regulations and experiences.

The final goal of the work is to provide useful recommendations and guidelines for the design of a cold plug for the emergency draining system of a molten salt reactor. Some numerical thermal simulations were performed with ANSYS mechanical (Finite Element Method) to be compared with results of the experiments and to make extrapolations for a new component to be used in a reactor.

The first method is a minimax problem and the second method is based on the chance constraint definition. To illustrate the methods and assess their performance, numerical experiments are conducted. Results show that the second method obtains better robust solutions with less simulation runs.

This paper presents a numerical simulation study, using the finite element method with modal analysis on the ANSYS Workbench platform, to determine the fundamental frequencies of the mechanical system and to affirm the design and manufacture parameters of the vibratory bowl feeders. Then an experiment was conducted to verify the results which confirm that the simulation model can be used to identify parameters of the bowl’s structure before the device is manufactured.

The aim of this paper is to present an efficient high order accuracy numerical scheme for conservation law on structure grids. The Monotone Upstream Centered Scheme for Conservation Laws (MUSCL) procedure renders the model to preserve the well-balanced property and achieve high accuracy and efficiency for solving nonlinear two dimensional shallow water equations (2DSWE).

Computational fluid dynamics, usually abbreviated as CFD, is a branch of fluid mechanics that uses numerical methods and algorithms to solve and analyze problems that involve fluid flows. Computers are used to perform the calculations required to simulate the interaction of liquids and gases with surfaces defined by boundary conditions. With high-speed supercomputers, better solutions can be achieved. Ongoing research yields software that improves the accuracy and speed of complex simulation scenarios such as transonic or turbulent flows.

Developing a book of any magnitude requires time away from family and friends, so as we finish this one, we must confess that despite the obvious intellectual and personal satisfactions we enjoyed while writing this book, it was not always a pleasant experience. The book’s contents are for the most part the result of scribbling on napkins over numerous macchiati and espressos away from the office at different posts over the years. As researchers and consultants, perhaps our most creative moments arose during lengthy informal, and somewhat dreamy, discussions about enhanced oil recovery.
