Ontological concepts

Quality assurance of large ontological systems such as SNOMED CT is an indispensable part of the terminology management lifecycle. We introduce a hybrid structural-lexical method for scalable and systematic discovery of missing hierarchical relations and concepts in SNOMED CT.

The goal of this work is to map Unified Medical Language System (UMLS) concepts to DBpedia resources using widely accepted ontology relations from the Simple Knowledge Organization System (skos:exactMatch, skos:closeMatch) and from the Resource Description Framework Schema (rdfs:seeAlso), as a result of which a complete mapping from UMLS (UMLS 2016AA) to DBpedia (DBpedia 2015-10) is made publicly available that includes 221 690 skos:exactMatch, 26 276 skos:closeMatch, and 6 784 322 rdfs:seeAlso mappings.

Concept normalization, the task of linking phrases in text to concepts in an ontology, is useful for many downstream tasks including relation extraction, information retrieval, etc. We present a generate-andrank concept normalization system based on our participation in the 2019 National NLP Clinical Challenges Shared Task Track 3 Concept Normalization.

However, we believe that researchers strive to test other hypotheses that fall outside of GO. We develop a new Web ontology rule language, called WORL, which combines a variant of OWL 2 RL with eDatalog¬. We allow additional features like negation, the minimal number restriction and unary external checkable predicates to occur at the left-hand side of concept inclusion axioms. In the work of Baader and Distel, a method has been proposed to axiomatize all general concept inclusions (GCIs) expressible in the description logic ℰℒK and valid in a given interpretation ℐ. This provides us with an effective method to learn ℰℒK-ontologies from interpretations. Often, there is a need to use the knowledge from multiple ontologies.
