SERPINC1 is a glycoprotein that regulates blood coagulation. SERPINC1 congenital or acquired deficiencies represent a significant risk factor for thromboembolic disease. SERPINC1 acquired defects are observed in very few cases and can occur in many clinical conditions such as treatment with l-asparaginase or oral contraceptive (particularly estrogen derivatives), but these conditions are not routinely investigated.

Oral contraceptive pills (OCPs) have a known prothrombotic effect. Obliterative portal venopathy (OPV) can be seen in patients with underlying hypercoagulability. We present a case of a 19-year-old female patient taking OCPs who presented with obstructive jaundice.

Budd–Chiari syndrome (BCS), a rare and life-threatening disorder due to hepatic venous outflow obstruction, is occasionally associated with hypoproteinemia. We herein report the first case of BCS with segmental obstruction of the intrahepatic portion of inferior vena cava (IVC) and hepatic veins (HVs) successfully treated by endovascular stenting in Vietnam. A 32-year-old female patient presented with a 2-month history of massive ascites and leg swelling. She refused history of oral contraceptives use. Hepatosplenomegaly without tenderness was noted.

The association of reproductive factors with hormone receptor (HR)-negative breast tumors remains uncertain. Within the EPIC cohort, Cox proportional hazards models were used to describe the relationships of reproductive factors (menarcheal age, time between menarche and first pregnancy, parity, number of children, age at first and last pregnancies, time since last full-term childbirth, breastfeeding, age at menopause, ever having an abortion and use of oral contraceptives [OC]) with risk of ER-PR- (n = 998) and ER+PR+ (n = 3,567) breast tumors.

Postmenopausal hormone therapy (HRT) and oral contraceptive (OC) use have in several studies been reported to be associated with a decreased colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. However, data on the association between HRT and OC and risk of different clinicopathological and molecular subsets of CRC are lacking.

Despite its relatively low effectiveness, withdrawal is a common contraceptive practice. In Vietnam, health concerns about hormonal contraception are strong and account for substantial method discontinuation. Given the paucity of evidence on withdrawal, our objective was to identify correlates of using withdrawal among women not desiring pregnancy.

Prior studies have described a reduced risk of developing ovarian cancer with the use of oral contraceptives. In this context, we decided to examine if oral contraceptive use prior to a diagnosis of ovarian cancer is associated with better overall and progression-free survival.

No screening programs are available for ovarian or endometrial cancer. One reason for this is the low incidence of the conditions, resulting in low positive predictive values for tests, which are not very specific. One way of addressing this problem might be to use risk factors to define subpopulations with a higher incidence.

The establishment of safe and effective fertility inhibitors for dogs must also be matched by evidence that non-surgical fertility control is an efficient, humane, and socially acceptable alternative to surgical sterilization for managing over abundant populations of dogs and their impact on human interests. The present study was undertaken to study the contraceptive effects of coumestrol in adult male dogs. Experimental group I was given 300 µg coumestrol dissolved in di-methyl sulfoxide orally in the commercial dog treats, on days 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28.

Reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies reduces the risk of maternal deaths. The contraceptive prevalence rate is only about 55 per cent leaving the rest of the women exposed to the risk of pregnancy, in many cases unwanted. Unmet need on contraception (limiting and spacing) is 21 per cent.33 About 16 per cent of girls in the age-group 15-19 have begun childbearing (either have had a live birth or pregnant with the first child).34 The poor status of health of child-bearing adolescents, coupled with physiological immaturity elevates the risk of maternal and perinatal deaths.
