Làm thoáng để đuổi các hợp chất hữu cơ dễ bay hơi (volatile organic compounds = VOCs) trong trường hợp nước bị ô nhiễm, bổ sung/bão hoà ôxi vào nước. Trong quá trình làm thoáng nước ngầm, nước được bão hoà ôxi, các khí khác (CO2) sẽ thoát ra, khi đó ôxi sẽ thực hiện các quá trình ôxi hoá, ví dụ ôxi hoá Fe(II) hoặc Mn(II). Municipal wastewater treatment plants generally utilise biological activated sludge processes to remove organic compounds and nitrogen.
