The presence of various types of contaminants such as heavy metals, emerging organic contaminants, pesticides, organic waste, organic dyes, radionuclide’s, fluorides, etc. cause water pollution. These pollutants are of concern to engineers, environmentalists and scientists. Due to the lack of freshwater, it is very important to recycle the wastewater after treatment to remove organic contaminates and heavy metal pollutants.

In this work, a bimetallic Ni-Cu-BDC metal-organic framework system was developed via solvent thermal approach with using an organic ligand recycled from waste plastic. The physical properties of Cu-BDC and bimetallic Ni-Cu-BDC were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and N2 isotherms adsorption-desorption (BET).

Aquaponics combines two technologies, recirculating aquaculture systems and hydroponics in a closed system. The nutrients recycled from fish tanks supply nutrients for vegetables grown in hydroponics, however in some cases, the nutrient levels may not be sufficient for the optimal growth and yield of plants.

A facile hydrothermal-aided process is demonstrated to prepare an analcime 3-dimensional (3D) network using recycled aluminum foil as an aluminum source without using an organic template. The prepared material was characterized by different techniques. An electrode/electrolyte interface with a 3D network structure allows for better contact and improves the kinetics of the charge transfer.

This study aims to characterize and investigate steel slag for the removal of its persistent organic pollutants (measured as COD) from pulp mill wastewater. Steel slag and its NaOH-modified states were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) surface area analysis, Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) pore size, and volume analysis.

The objective of this project was to develop \(Ti{O_2}\) based multifunctional substrates through silver decoration, while simultaneously enhancing the photocatalytic performance of \(Ti{O_2}\) in the substrate. Employing Ag nanoparticles introduced additional functionality to the system, namely surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS), thus enabling the detection of trace amounts of organic molecules prior to their degradation, all with the same substrate.

The excellent C.R. adsorption capacity of the a-Fe2O3 nanoplates was further confirmed by conducting experiments with a solution containing a mixture of dyes. Our findings indicate that the synthesized a-Fe2O3 nanoplates have a great potential in removing industrial waste, such as C.R. from polluted water.

Zeolite Cs-ABW nanocatalyst has been hydrothermally synthesized without using any harmful organic template. The zeolite nanocrystal with very high solid yield (81.88%) can be obtained within 60 min and at 180°C (~20 atm), conditions that are much faster and gentler than the existing synthesis methods. The orthorhombic Cs-ABW nanocrystals (mean size of 32 nm) have high aluminum content (Si/Al ratio = 1.14) and possess high basicity.

The protean chemical properties of mercury have long made it attractive for diverse applications, but its toxicity requires great care in its use, disposal, and recycling. Mercury occurs in multiple chemical forms, and the molecular basis for the distinct toxicity of its various forms is only partly understood. Global transcriptomics applied over time can reveal how a cell recognizes a toxicant and what cellular subsystems it marshals to repair and recover from the damage. The longitudinal effects on the transcriptome of exponential phase E.

Waste can be an opportunity for cities to meet social and environmental goals. This paper is based on research carried out by Dias (2002 and 2009) and explores the main features of the system designed by Belo Horizonte city which integrated cooperatives of informal waste pickers into its municipal recycling system. The paper reviews its genesis of organizing, the main dimensions of the recycling system, the work specialization within cooperatives and main impacts of this integrated system.
