Ovarian cancer symptoms
-
Ovarian cancer is one of the most common gynecological malignancies due to the lack of early symptoms, early diagnosis and limited screening. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the molecular mechanism underlying the occurrence and progression of ovarian cancer and to identify a basic biomarker for the early diagnosis and clinical treatment of ovarian cancer.

During the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 pandemic, several patient groups are at particular risk. Mortality is higher among cancer patients and may be increased further by thromboembolic events, which are more common in coronavirus 2019 patients according to recent publications.

One of the most frequently reported effects of cancer and its treatments is cancer-related cognitive impairment (CRCI). Viral infections may affect inflammation and immune function and therefore may influence patient symptoms, including CRCI.

Several factors contribute to delayed presentation with ovarian cancer (OC) symptoms including poor symptom awareness and barriers to seeking help. This study explored the anticipated time to seek medical advice for possible OC symptoms and its association with OC symptom awareness.

Ovarian cancer is amongst one of the most commonly occurring cancers affecting women, and the leading cause of gynecologic related cancer death. Its poor prognosis and high mortality rates can be attributed to the absence of specific signs and symptoms until advance stages, which frequently leads to late diagnosis.

Ovarian cancer (OC) is the fifth most common malignant female cancer with a high mortality, mainly because of aggressive high-grade serous carcinomas (HGSOC), but also due to absence of specific early symptoms and effective detection strategies.

This manuscript evaluates whether specific symptoms, a symptom index (SI), CA125 and HE4 can help identify women with malignant tumors in the group of women with adnexal masses previously diagnosed with ultrasound.

While ovarian cancer is recognised as having identifiable early symptoms, understanding of the key determinants of symptom awareness and early presentation is limited. A population-based survey of ovarian cancer awareness and anticipated delayed presentation with symptoms was conducted as part of the International Cancer Benchmarking Partnership (ICBP).

The management of ovarian cancer remains a challenge. Because of the lack of early symptoms, it is often diagnosed at a late stage when it is likely to have metastasized beyond ovaries. Currently, platinum based chemotherapy is the primary treatment for the disease. However acquired drug resistance remains an on-going problem.

In the absence of routine ovarian cancer screening, promoting help-seeking in response to ovarian symptoms is a potential route to early diagnosis. The factors influencing women’s anticipated time to presentation with potential ovarian cancer symptoms were examined.

Women with ovarian cancer can present with a variety of symptoms and signs, and an increasing range of tests are available for their investigation. A number of international guidelines provide advice for the initial assessment of possible ovarian cancer in symptomatic women.

Ovarian cancer can no longer be considered one disease entity, but a heterogeneous group of diseases. Our understanding of its clinical and molecular complexity is improving nota‐ bly over the last decade. This is of utmost importance when it comes to determine the most adequate treatment strategy for each individual patient. Despite not being the most frequent tumor, ovarian cancer has the highest mortality rate amongst gynecological cancers.

Exposure to tobacco smoke at a young age either by smoking or by being around people who smoke may be related to an increased breast cancer risk. Sixteen studies have examined smoking at a young age. These studies compared women who smoked at a young age to women who had never smoked or who were not currently smokers. Most studies reported a small increase in breast cancer risk associated with starting smoking under age 17.

Most women presenting with ovarian cancer have advanced disease and have had symptoms for months. Greater awareness among both women and healthcare professionals might result in women presenting earlier with less advanced disease, leading to better outcomes. There is insufficient understanding of the factors that influence earlier diagnosis in women with ovarian cancer, especially the relationship between duration of symptoms and stage at diagnosis.
