This article draws a state of knowledge of the dissolution of uranium dioxide in nitric acid media. The chemistry of the reaction is first investigated, and two reactions appear as most suitable to describe the mechanism, leading to the formation of monoxide and dioxide nitrogen as reaction by-products, while the oxidation mechanism is shown to happen before solubilization.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a potent intra- and intercellular mes-senger involved in the control of vascular tone, neuronal signallingandhost response to infection. Inmammals,NOis synthesized by oxidation ofL-arginine catalysed by heme-proteins called NO-synthases with intermediate formation of N x -hydroxy-L-arginine (NOHA). NOHA and some hydroxyguanidines have been shown to be able to deliver nitrogen oxides including NO in the presence of various oxidative systems.

Cytidine 5¢-triphosphate synthase catalyses the ATP-dependent formation of CTP from UTP using either ammonia orL-glutamine as the source of nitrogen. When glutamine is the substrate, GTP is required as an allosteric effector to promote catalysis. Limited trypsin-catalysed proteolysis, Edman degradation, and site-directed muta-genesis were used to identify peptide bonds C-terminal to three basic residues (Lys187, Arg429, and Lys432) of Escherichia coliCTP synthase thatwere highly susceptible to proteolysis. ...

In Klebsiella pneumoniae, the nif specific transcriptional activator NifA is inhibited byNifL in response tomolecular oxygen and ammonium. Here, we demonstrate complex formation between NifL and NifA (approximately 1 : 1 ratio), when synthesized in the presence of oxygen and/or ammonium. Under simultaneous oxygen- and nitrogen-limitation, significant but fewer NifL–NifA complexes (approximately 1%) were formed in the cytoplasm as a majority of NifL was sequestered to the cytoplasmic mem-brane.

Riftia pachyptila(Vestimentifera) is a giant tubeworm living around the volcanic deep-sea vents of the East Pacific Rise. This animal is devoid of a digestive tract and lives in an intimate symbiosis with a sulfur-oxidizing chemoauto-trophic bacterium. This bacterial endosymbiont is localized in the cells of a richly vascularized organ of the worm: the trophosome.

The extracellular signal regulated protein kinases (ERK1/2) are essential for normal development and functional plasti-city of the central nervous system. However, a growing number of recent studies in models of cerebral ischemia, brain trauma and neurodegenerative diseases implicate a detrimental role for ERK1/2 signaling during oxidative neuronal injury. Neurons undergoing oxidative stress-rela-ted injuries typically display a biphasic or sustained pattern of ERK1/2 activation.

Salvinorin A is a potent kappa opioid receptor (KOP) agonist with unique structural and pharmacological properties. This non-nitrogenous ligand lacks nearly all the structural features commonly associated with opioid ligand binding and selectivity. This study explores the structural basis to salvinorin A binding and selectivity using a combination of chimeric and single-point mutant opioid receptors.

Aminotransferases catalyse synthetic and degradative reactions of amino acids, and serve as a key linkage between central carbon and nitrogen metabolism in most organisms. In this study, three aminotransferases (AT1, AT2 and AT3) were purified and characterized fromHydrogenobacter thermophilus, a hydrogen-oxidizing chemolithoautotrophic bacterium, which has been reported to possess unique features in its carbon and nitrogen anabolism.
