Oxygen inactivate enzymes

Oxidative stress results from an imbalance between the production of reactive oxygen species and the antioxidants defences, in favour of the former. In recent years, the association between oxidative processes, environmental change and life histories has received much attention. Metals are important inducers of oxidative stress in aquatic organisms, promoting formation of reactive oxygen species through two mechanisms.

Free radicals and other active derivatives of oxygen inactivate enzymes and important plant cellular components. Superoxide dismutases (SODs) have been identified as essential components in an organism’s defence mechanism. This study was devoted to the investigation of SOD activity in 13 durum wheat landraces from Iran and Azerbaijan under 2 (drought and normal) conditions.

Ascorbate peroxidase (APX) isoforms localized in the stroma and thyla-koid membrane of chloroplasts play a central role in scavenging reactive oxygen species generated by photosystems. These enzymes are inactivated within minutes by H2O2 when the reducing substrate, ascorbate, is deple-ted.
