We observe that a huge number of concepts are defined in Web documents, and that the sentences that define the same concept tend to convey mostly the same information using different expressions and thus contain many paraphrases.   • In this paper, we present a novel way of tackling the monolingual alignment problem on pairs of sentential paraphrases by means of edit rate computation. In order to inform the edit rate, information in the form of subsentential paraphrases is provided by a range of techniques built for different purposes.   • Paraphrase generation (PG) is important in plenty of NLP applications. However, the research of PG is far from enough. In this paper, we propose a novel method for statistical paraphrase generation (SPG), which can (1) achieve various applications based on a uniform statistical model, and (2) naturally combine multiple resources to enhance the PG performance. In our experiments, we use the proposed method to generate paraphrases for three different applications.

  • We propose a new specifically designed method for paraphrase generation based on Monte-Carlo sampling and show how this algorithm is suitable for its task. Moreover, the basic algorithm presented here leaves a lot of opportunities for future improvement. In particular, our algorithm does not constraint the scoring function in opposite to Viterbi based decoders. It is now possible to use some global features in paraphrase scoring functions. This algorithm opens new outlooks for paraphrase generation and other natural language processing applications like statistical machine translation.

This paper shows how a meta-grammar, defining structure at the meta level, is useful in the case of such operations; in particular, how it solves problems in the current definition of Synchronous TAG (Shieber, 1994) caused by ignoring such structure in mapping between grammars, for applications such as translation.   • Paraphrases have proved to be useful in many applications, including Machine Translation, Question Answering, Summarization, and Information Retrieval. Paraphrase acquisition methods that use a single monolingual corpus often produce only syntactic paraphrases. We present a method for obtaining surface paraphrases, using a 150GB (25 billion words) monolingual corpus. Our method achieves an accuracy of around 70% on the paraphrase acquisition task. We further show that we can use these paraphrases to generate surface patterns for relation extraction.
