Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease which causes significant pain, joint deformity, functional disability. The transition to a value-based payment system offers pathologists the opportunity to play an increased role in population health by improving outcomes and safety as well as reducing costs. Although laboratory testing itself accounts for a small portion of health-care spending, laboratory data have significant downstream effects in patient management as well as diagnosis. Pathologists currently are heavily engaged in precision medicine, use of laboratory and pathology test results (including autopsy data) to reduce diagnostic errors, and play leading roles in diagnostic management teams.

Pathology informatics is a relatively new field with limited structured training programs for pathologists, especially for computer programming. Here, we describe our efforts to develop and implement a training program in the department of pathology at the University of Florida to meet these additional needs of current students as well as faculty and staff. Three one-credit courses were created using a flipped classroom design.

It is the sheltering-in-place concept that has not been adequately planned or tested. As Annexes are created to address vulnerabilities, it is realized that many disasters involving the elderly population will require staying in place, sometimes for prolonged time periods, rather than evacuation (Florida Health Care Association 2007). These plans must be created and tested as well. Issues discussed earlier pertaining to supply chains and stockpiling are paramount here. In general, plans are useless if not tested. This was again demonstrated through the Katrina disaster.

The topics covered and the approach taken were strongly influenced by real-life experience. Pathology residents and clinical laboratory scientists, like the general population, vary greatly in familiarity with information issues in the laboratory and the computer system and infrastructure that supports an information system.

Despite its clinical importance, a dearth of information exists on the cellular and molecular mechanisms that underpin brain stem death. A suitable neural substrate for mechanistic delineation on brain stem death resides in the rostral ventrolateral medulla (RVLM) because it is the origin of a life-and-death signal that sequentially increases (pro-life) and decreases (pro-death) to reflect the advancing central cardiovascular regulatory dysfunction during the progression towards brain stem death in critically ill patients.

Parkinson’s disease is the second most common neurodegenerative disorder. The pathological hallmark of the disease is degeneration of midbrain dopaminergic neurons. Genetic association studies have linked 13 human chromosomal loci to Parkinson’s disease. Identification of gene(s), as part of the etiology of Parkinson’s disease, within the large number of genes residing in these loci can be achieved through several approaches, including screening methods, and considering appropriate criteria.
