Pearlmillet (Pennisetum glaucum L.) is largely grown for grain and fodder purpose under those situations where other crops generally fail. Pearlmillet as a food crop is limited to the developing countries in Asia, and particularly in Africa and ranked sixth in the world followed by rice, wheat, maize, barley and sorghum (Anonymous, 2010-11).

Combining ability for grain yield and its components in pearl millet was studied in 48 hybrids developed by crossing six A- and their six B-lines with 8 R-lines in a line x tester mating design. The three A- lines viz. 81A1, 81A4 and 81A5 and their corresponding B- lines represented three different systems of male sterility and were very diverse. The 12 parents and the 48 hybrids were grown separately in contiguous blocks in 2R × 4.0 m × 0.45 m in randomized block design with three replications in two environments viz.

This study aimed to find the gene action, GCA and SCA effects for yield, its components and micronutrients and their association with each other. For this, thirty six crosses (hybrids), nine parents and two checks ICTP 8203 Fe and ICMB 98222 (totalling 47 genotypes) were evaluated during Kharif 2014 at three locations viz., IARI, New Delhi (zone A), IARI Regional Centre, Dharwad (zone B) and National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources, Regional Station, Jodhpur (zone A1). These locations represented all pearl millet growing zones.

A set of 27 pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum (L.) R. Br.] ) hybrids that newly developed using A1 cytoplasmic male-sterile lines, were evaluated over three (two wet and one dry) crop seasons (hereafter refer to as environments) in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with two replications to predict genotype by environment (G × E) interaction for grain yield and its component traits, and to identify the high yielding stable hybrids through AMMI and cluster analysis method for possible adaption. Analysis of variance showed significant genetic variation for all studied traits exists.

The study was conducted to determine the correlation and path coefficients among the yield and yield component characters in 14 parental lines and 91 hybrids of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum L. R. Br), formulated by a diallel cross excluding reciprocals. Strong and significant genotypic and phenotypic correlations were observed between grain yield (kg ha-1 ) with panicle girth (cm),plant height (cm) and panicle length (cm).

Genetics of quality parameters and their associations with grain yield and its component traits have a direct bearing on devising effective strategies for breeding biofortified crop cultivars. A newly developed 54 hybrids of pearl millet showed large genetic variability for yield and nutritional traits. Correlation studies revealed that single plant yield has positive significant correlation with the agronomic traits viz., plant height, number of productive tillers, test weight, single head grain weight and quality traits viz.

Downy mildew, caused by Sclerospora graminicola (Sacc.) Schroet, is a disease of great economic significance in the production of pearl millet (Pennisetum glaucum). Host physiology particularly host metabolites and oxidising enzymes get disturbed due to attack of Sclerospora graminicola. Altered state of oxidative enzyme plays an important role in plant metabolism during pathogenesis. In the present investigation biochemical characterization of pearl millet genotypes - HHB 223 and 7042 S was carried out at 30, 40, 50 and 70 DAS.

An experiment was conducted on plot number C-10, Agronomy Instructional Farm, C. P. College of Agriculture, Sardarkrushinagar Dantiwada Agricultural University, Sardarkrushinagar during summer season of the year 2012 on Loamy Sand soil. Four hybrids viz., GHB 732, GHB 744, GHB 538 and GHB 558 were taken under study. Grain and dry fodder yields were significantly higher in case of hybrid GHB 558 as compared to GHB 744, GHB 538 and GHB 732. Similar response trend was observed in the growth attributes viz., plant height at 60 DAS and harvest, total tillers per plant.
