Bereaved parents experience higher rates of depressive and post-traumatic stress symptoms after the stillbirth of a baby than after live-birth. Yet, these effects remain underreported in the literature and, consequently, insufficiently addressed in health provider education and practice.

Reducing neonatal death has been an emerging challenge in low and middle income countries in the past decade. The development of the low cost interventions and their effective delivery are needed to reduce deaths from birth asphyxia.

Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the most common serious pulmonary morbidity in premature infants. The score for neonatal acute physiology (SNAP) is a physiologic severity index for neonatal intensive care and correlates well with neonatal mortality and clinical outcomes.

To better understand factors that may impact infant mortality rates (IMR), we evaluated the consistency across birth hospitals in the classification of a birth event as either a fetal death or an early neonatal (infant) death using natality data from North Carolina for the years 1995–2000.

Previous studies on the mortality rate of omphalocele are limited. The risk of death of non-isolated omphalocele and that of cases of omphalocele that are diagnosed prenatally by ultrasound are unclear. This study aimed to estimate the perinatal mortality of pregnancies with omphalocele.

In Brazil, the prevalence of prematurity has increased in recent years and it is a major cause of death in the neonatal period. Therefore, this study aims at assessing perinatal factors associated with early neonatal deaths in very low birth weight preterm infants born in a region of Brazil with low Human Development Index.

There are conflicting results in the literature on the impact of chorioamnionitis on neonatal respiratory morbidities. However, most studies are based on small clinical samples and fail to account for the competing risk of perinatal death.

Adverse birth outcome which attributes to most perinatal deaths is an important indicator of child health and survival. Hence, this study aims to identify determinants of adverse birth outcome among mothers who gave birth in public hospitals of Tigrai region, North Ethiopia.

Perinatal asphyxia and resulting hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy is a major cause of death and longterm disability in term born neonates. Up to 20,000 infants each year are affected by HIE in Europe and even more in regions with lower level of perinatal care. The only established therapy to improve outcome in these infants is therapeutic hypothermia.

Postmortem memento photography has emerged in Western hospitals as part of compassionate bereavement care for parents facing perinatal death. Many parents endorse this psychosocial intervention, yet implementation varies greatly and little research on parents’ specific needs guides health care professionals.

To classify the infants into 9 blocks based on the deviation of both placental weight (PW) and fetal/placental weight ratio (F/P) Z score and compared the incident rate of perinatal death in each of the small for date (SFD) vs. appropriate for date (AFD) vs. heavy for date (HFD) groups.

Reducing the number of unwanted pregnancies reduces the risk of maternal deaths. The contraceptive prevalence rate is only about 55 per cent leaving the rest of the women exposed to the risk of pregnancy, in many cases unwanted. Unmet need on contraception (limiting and spacing) is 21 per cent.33 About 16 per cent of girls in the age-group 15-19 have begun childbearing (either have had a live birth or pregnant with the first child).34 The poor status of health of child-bearing adolescents, coupled with physiological immaturity elevates the risk of maternal and perinatal deaths.

In the Appendix, we compare the distributions of deaths by cause and by age for the NDMC and the National Capital Territory of Delhi. The distributions of deaths by cause are similar, with between 20 and 25 percent of all medically certified deaths attributable to causes associated with air pollution (respiratory illnesses and cardiovascular disease). Roughly the same percentage of deaths are attributable to infectious diseases and to perinatal causes. The distribution of deaths by age group differs somewhat between the NDMC and the National Capital Territory.

The role of the placental bed in normal pregnancy and its complications has been intensively investigated for 50 years, following the introduction of a technique for placental bed biopsy. It is now recognized that disorders of the maternal–fetal interface in humans have been implicated in a broad range of pathological conditions, including spontaneous abortion, preterm labor, preterm premature rupture of membranes, preeclampsia, intrauterine growth restriction, abruptio placentae, and fetal death.

In low- and middle-income countries, complications from pregnancy and childbirth are the leading cause of death among girls aged 15 to 19. And in 2008, there were an estimated three million unsafe abortions among girls in this age group. The adverse effects of adolescent childbearing also extend to the health of their infants. Perinatal deaths are 50% higher among babies born to mothers under 20 years of age than among those born to mothers aged 20 to 29. The newborns of adolescent mothers are also more likely to have low birth weight, with the risk of long-term effects....

Unfortunately, in LMICs the situation does not seem to be better. A detailed review of 2882 deaths of women during pregnancy, or up to 42 days postpartum, conducted in three provinces in Vietnam, found that 29% of those deaths were attributed to non-natural causes (suicide, murder and accidents) of which 14% were due to suicide (65). An enlarged study conducted by the WHO, covering seven provinces in Vietnam, confirmed the high percentage of suicides among women in the perinatal period: 8% to 16.5%, depending on the province (66). In view of the absence of systematic data, a few studies that specifically examined causes of death during the perinatal period are worth mentioning, particularly in view of the dramatic and unexpected results they revealed. In high-income countries, Appleby (57), Kendell (58), Frautschi, Cerulli, and Maine (59), and Brockington (60) have examined mortality during the perinatal period. Overall, they found that the leading cause of death during this period was suicide, with rates significantly higher than in non-pregnant, non puerperal women.

Oral health professionals play a significant role in counseling patients concerning the harmful effects of tobacco, alcohol and recreational drugs. During the pregnancy, the consequences of these behaviors are profound. Multiple studies have demonstrated a clear association between maternal smoking and perinatal morbidity and mortality (6-10). Women who smoke are at increased risk for low birth weight babies, bleeding during pregnancy, premature labor and preterm rupture of membranes.

Malnutrition in all its forms either directly or indirectly is responsible for approximately half of all deaths worldwide. This applies to perinatal and infectious diseases as well as chronic diseases. Malnutrition accounts for 11% of the global burden of disease, leading to long-term poor health and disability and poor educational and developmental outcomes. Worldwide, by 2010 it was found that about 104 million children under five years of age were underweight and 171 million stunted.
