Ebook "Functional and ecological xylem anatomy" will describe the xylem structure of different plant groups, and will put the findings in a physiological and ecological context. For instance, when differences in vessel diameter are featured, then there will be an explanation why this matters for water transport efficiency and safety from cavitation. The focus is on the hydraulic function of xylem, although mechanical support and storage will also be covered.

Peroxidases (PODs) have various physiological and biochemical roles in plant growth, development and stress response. The POD genes were identified in various plant species, but in passion fruit has not yet been thoroughly characterized. Here, we discovered 30 putative POD genes from the genome of Passiflora edulis Sims. For further elucidation, comprehensive bioinformatics analysis was utilized to determine the physicochemical properties, gene organization, conserved motifs, gene duplication and phylogenetic relationships of PePOD genes.

In recent decades, the frequency of flooding is increasing with the change of global climate. Flooding has become one of the major abiotic stresses that seriously affect growth and development of plants. Triarrhena sacchariflora Nakai has been considered a promising energy crop for utilization in ethanol production.

Drought is an abiotic stress factor that negatively affects plant development and causes economic losses in plant production, and its effect is getting significant every day. Spinach contains a high amount of water and drought stress affects its development as well as causing changes in its biochemical contents. In this study, it is aimed to determine the changes in the morphological, physiological, and biochemical contents of spinach grown under deficit irrigation conditions in different stages of development.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are byproducts of normal plant metabolism and their production is elevated under environmental stresses such as drought, extreme temperature, and salinity. Among these, salinity is a worldwide problem that impacts the fertility of arable lands and sustainability of food security, which is getting more attention due to climate change. Halophytes can survive and reproduce in soils containing high concentrations of salt and have developed adaptation mechanisms at physiological, biochemical, and molecular levels including maintenance of ROS metabolism.

Nonspecific phospholipase C (NPC), which belongs to a phospholipase C subtype, is a class of phospholipases that hydrolyzes the primary membrane phospholipids, such as phosphatidylcholine, to yield sn-1, 2- diacylglycerol and a phosphorylated head-group. NPC plays multiple physiological roles in lipid metabolism and signaling in plants. To fully understand the putative roles of NPC genes in upland cotton, we cloned NPC genes from Gossypium hirsutum and carried out structural, expression and evolutionary analysis.

Mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades play critical functions in almost every aspect of plant growth and development, which regulates many physiological and biochemical processes. As a middle nodal point of the MAPK cascades, although evolutionary analysis of MKK from individual plant families had some reports, their evolutionary history in entire plants is still not clear.

Euryale ferox Salisb., an annual aquatic plant, is the only species in the genus Euryale in the Nymphaeaceae. Seeds of E. ferox are a nutritious food and also used in traditional Chinese medicine (Qian Shi in Mandarin). The molecular events that occurred during seed development in E. ferox have not yet been characterized. In this study, we performed transcriptomic analysis of four developmental stages (T1, T2, T3, and T4) in E. ferox seeds with three biological replicates per developmental stage to understand the physiological and biochemical processes during E. ferox seeds development.

The cucumber is one of the most important vegetables worldwide and is used as a research model for study of phloem transport, sex determination and temperature-photoperiod physiology. The shoot apex is the most important plant tissue in which the cell fate and organ meristems have been determined. In this study, a series of whole-genome small RNA, degradome and transcriptome analyses were performed on cucumber shoot apical tissues treated with high vs. low temperature and long vs. short photoperiod.

Our previous study finds that male sterility in Salvia miltiorrhiza could result in stunted growth and reduced biomass, but their molecular mechanisms have not yet been revealed. In this article, we investigate the underlying mechanism of male sterility and its impact on plant growth and metabolic yield by using physiological analysis and mRNA sequencing (RNA-Seq).

Histone deacetylases (HDACs) catalyze histone deacetylation and suppress gene transcription during various cellular processes. Within the superfamily of HDACs, RPD3/HDA1-type HDACs are the most studied, and it is reported that RPD3 genes play crucial roles in plant growth and physiological processes. However, there is a lack of systematic research on the RPD3/HDA1 gene family in cotton.
