The objectives of our research were to determine the influence of water physico chemical properties on phytoplankton population of two lake ecosystem (Kirumambakkam and Korkadu), Pondicherry region. Sulphate, Organic Carbon (OC), phosphate, sodium, potassium, DO, salinity and TDS were higher in Kirumamabakkam lake water samples.

Zooplankton holds a key position in the food web as it was directly related to the consumption of organic energy produced by phytoplanktonic photosynthesis and then by transforming it to the higher tropical levels of hetirotropes such as fish. Some zooplankton population disappeared at a specified period and reappeared during other period. This disappearance may be due to the fact that some species occur in spores, under favorable conditions spore germinate and appear as zooplankton.

Chlorpyrifos, is one of the most widely used organophosphorus insecticides for agricultural activities, and it is highly toxic to non-target organisms. This paper aims to acquire the experimental data on the eco-toxicological effects of Chlorpyrifos and the data can support the assessment of toxicity on the phytoplankton. The microalgae S. platensis was employed to evaluate toxicity of Chlorpyrifos by means of measuring the specific growth rate, generation time, percent growth inhibition, the pigment content of chlorophyll a and carotenoid and the antioxidant enzyme super oxide dismutase.

Studies of the composition and density of phytoplankton and the water quality of Nhu Y river were conducted over six months (March to August 2011). Phytoplankton samples were collected by filtration and immediately preserved in Lugol’s solution. The phytoplankton species composition recorded 117 species belonging to six divisions: Cyanobacteria (24 taxa), Bacillariophyta (14 taxa), Chlorophyta (45 taxa), Euglenophyta (31 taxa), Cryptophyta (2 taxa), and Dinophyta (1 taxa), of which Chlorophyta and Euglenophyta were dominant in terms of species numbers.

This study examines the variations and relationship between phytoplanktonic organisms and chlorophyll a in Sultan Sazligi marshes. During the sampling period, the density of phytoplankton and the value of chlorophyll a were examined, and it was found that the correlation between them was high.

The lowest diversity value was observed in the first station in January, 2001. Lake Gölbafli has mesotrophic characteristics due to the seasonal distribution of phytoplanktonic organisms. However, it will be necessary to conduct further physical and chemical analyses of the lake water to obtain more detailed information about the trophic status of the lake.

The composition and abundance of phytoplankton and the corresponding environmental conditions were investigated during a mucilage event (October 2007-February 2008) in the Sea of Marmara. The mucilage producers Gonyaulax fragilis, Skeletonema costatum, and Cylindrotheca closterium were identified as abundant species. Thallassiosira rotula was also identified in large numbers.
