Ebook "Environmental stress and amelioration in livestock production" is the first of its kind to address in detail all aspects of environmental physiology and livestock adaptation. With information and case studies collected and analyzed by professionals working in diversified ecological zones, this book explores the influence of the environment on livestock production across global biomes. The challenges the livestock industry faces in maintaining the delicate balance between animal welfare and production are also highlighted.

We report a rare case in medical literature of a patient with pineal gland teratoma and uncommon metastases. Usually, metastases of this kind of tumor are located in several organs such as lung and breast, but here we found metastases to the spinal cord and vertebrae.

Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) has been identified as important regulator in hypothalamic-pituitaryovarian axis associated with sheep prolificacy. However, little is known of their expression pattern and potential roles in the pineal gland of sheep.

Morphine-induced hyperalgesia and tolerance significantly limits its clinical use in relieving acute and chronic pain. Melatonin, a pineal gland neurohormone, has been shown to participate in certain neuropsychopharmacological actions.

These results are the first evidence that the photoperiod to which the mother is exposed during gestation affects the postnatal gonadal development of the young and the pineal gland and melatonin play an important role in the transmission of photoperiodic information in the Mongolian gerbil.

Photoperiod is an important environmental cue in the regulation of reproductive activity in Mongolian gerbils. Photoperiodic information is ultimately transduced into a hormonal signal by the pineal gland. We examined the effect of constantrelease melatonin capsules on the testicular size and body weights of male Mongolian gerbils exposed to a long (14L: 10D) photoperiod.

The present study aimed to assess the effects of subcutaneous melatonin implants under different photoperiodic conditions: did the implants affect serum leptin levels, body weight, food consumption, and/or testicular weight male hamsters were exposed to long and short photoperiods for 10 weeks and received subcutaneous melatonin implants (1 mg in 24 mg beeswax) every 2 weeks.

Melatonin is a ubiquitous molecule and widely distributed in nature, with functional activity occurring in unicellular organisms, plants, fungi and animals. In most vertebrates, including humans, melatonin is synthes-ized primarily in the pineal gland and is regulated by the environmental light⁄dark cycle via the suprachiasmatic nucleus.

Primary germ cell tumors (GCTs) of the testis, arising by the malignant transformation of primordial germ cells, constitute 95% of all testicular neoplasms. Infrequently, GCTs arise from an extragonadal site, including the mediastinum, retroperitoneum, and, very rarely, the pineal gland. This disease is notable for the young age of the afflicted patients, the totipotent capacity for differentiation of the tumor cells, and its curability; about 95% of newly diagnosed patients are cured.
