The changes in temperature, microbial population dynamics and other factors were studied during the process of composting by layering residues of Calotropis procera, Prosopis juliflora, Azadirachta indica, Acacia nilotica and weeds in separate pits. Temperature began to rise soon after filling the residues and ranged between 55–59 °C for next 6 to 7 days with maximum being in Calotropis pit (59.2 °C).

The newly developed cellulolytic microbial consortium was evaluated for its composting efficiency on rural and urban waste in open pit method. During composting highest temperature was recorded in second week in both the rural and urban waste compost pits. The temperature declined gradually thereafter in all the treatments upto 11th week and remained almost stable thereafter.

A study on the manurial quality of enriched organics was conducted in the research farm of CSKHPKV, Palampur (Himachal Pradesh) falling under wet temperate mid hill climatic condition for two years. Two organics namely farmyard manure and compost (prepared from locally available plant biomass comprising of clippings of Lantana camara and Eupatorium spp) were enriched with indigenous Jhamarkotra Phosphate Rock (JPR-A) containing 8.1% P in the clay lined pits of 1 m3 size.
