Planktonic foraminifera
-
Twenty marine sediment samples have been collected in the Quaternary sediments in the southwest deep-depression East Sea region to study the foraminifera’s characterization. They all belong to the planktonic foraminifer group, living in the deep sea. Their indicator ages range from Miocene to Recent.

The Ypresian to Priabonian Gubs river section, in the Adygean high of the northern slope of the Caucasus, is a rare locality, in which Ypresian–Lutetian representative larger benthic foraminifera coexist with planktonic Foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton.

A planktonic foraminiferal assemblage obtained from the Yavca stratigraphic section north of Mersin shows that the age of a melange-related turbiditic sequence extends to the Danian (Early Palaeocene). Previously, this turbiditic sequence, termed the Yavca Formation, was considered to be of Late Cretaceous or Campanian-Maastrichtian age.

The detailed analysis of molluscan and planktonic foraminiferal fauna in the Oligocene Çardak-Dazkırı subbasin, in northeastern Denizli province (western Turkey) allowed accurate dating of the deposits, together with interpretation of their depositional environments.

The Oued Necham (ON) section (Kalâat Senan, central Tunisia) provides a well-exposed outcrop of a CampanianMaastrichtian series that consists essentially of chalky limestones (i.e. the Abiod Formation) grading progressively to a marly unit (i.e. the El Haria Formation).

The Kocaeli Peninsula (NW Turkey) provides one of the best exposed deep marine Upper Cretaceous-Palaeocene sections in north-western Anatolia. The biostratigraphic framework from three sections, namely Belen, Bulduk, and Toylar, in the southern part of the Kocaeli Peninsula is established by means of planktonic foraminifera.

Independent sea surface temperature (SST) estimates obtained using planktonic foraminiferal transfer functions and the Mg/Ca ratios show excellent agreement, with r2 correlation coefficients of 0.92–0.95. Planktonic foraminiferal assemblages are similar, through time, across several deep basins, suggesting that major changes must have occurred in near synchroneity across the Aegean Sea.

The time interval of the sedimentation in the southern Hellenic Thrace Basin (Lemnos Island, northeast Aegean Sea) was studied, based on the qualitative analysis of calcareous nannoplankton and quantitative analysis of planktonic foraminifera. The present study offers the first taxonomic analysis of planktonic foraminifera of this age in the Hellenic southern Thrace Basin (Lemnos Island).
