  • We have witnessed an explosion in our understanding of the evolution and structure of plant genomes in recent years. Here, we highlight three important emergent realizations: (1) that the evolutionary history of all plant genomes contains multiple, cyclical episodes of whole-genome doubling that were followed by myriad fractionation processes; (2) that the vast majority of the variation in genome size reflects the dynamics of proliferation and loss of lineage-specific transposable elements;...

  • The hypolipidemic effect of fat spreads containing flaxseed oil (rich plant source of longchain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid) represents the aim of the present study. Such effect was biologically evaluated through assessment of four biochemical parameters that reflect the blood serum lipid profile, namely total cholesterol, low- and high-density lipoproteins

  • Pod filling stage considers as a receiver (sink), which reflects plant performance during previous growth stages. In order to study, the influence of drought imposed at different growth stages, and the impact of foliar applied glycine betaine (GB) and proline on the status of osmolytes and antioxidant defense system of pea plant during pod filling stage, a field experiment was conducted in 2012/2013 and 2013/2014 on clay loam soil.

  • Our study sets forth the outcomes of an interdisciplinary project conducted in order to fill the information gap on the management of a wetland ecosystem, in the case of a protected area on the south-eastern coast of Turkey. The hypothesis of the study is that the pattern of species composition reflects soil salinity level and some species can act as relevant indicators. The study aimed to discover a relationship between soil salinity and vegetation composition and establish some indicators useful for monitoring.

  • DNA methylation is one of the major epigenetic modifications influencing the regulation of gene expression. The opium poppy is an important medicinal plant. Its latex contains opium, which is a rich source of pharmaceutical benzyisoquinoline alkaloids (BIA). Here, the methylation-sensitive amplification polymorphism (MSAP) profiling technique using 21 MSAP molecular markers was applied in order to compare levels of DNA methylation between 6 opium poppy varieties. MSAP profiling reflected the different methylation statuses among opium poppy varieties having divergent BIA content.

  • Powdery mildew (PM) is one of the most important and widespread plant diseases caused by biotrophic fungi. Notably, while monocot (grass) PM fungi exhibit high-level of host-specialization, many dicot PM fungi display a broad host range. To understand such distinct modes of host-adaptation, we sequenced the genomes of four dicot PM biotypes belonging to Golovinomyces cichoracearum or Oidium neolycopersici.

  • Modern plant taxonomy reflects phylogenetic relationships among taxa based on proposed morphological and genetic similarities. However, taxonomical relation is not necessarily reflected by close overall resemblance, but rather by commonality of very specific morphological characters or similarity on the molecular level.

  • Interest in soil enzyme activity has increased recently since their activities are believed to reflect the potential capacity of soil to perform nutrient transformations. Since, soil microbial and enzyme systems are associated with organic manure management, incorporation of organic manures into soil not only plays an important role in soil chemical and biological activity, but also affects the rate at which nutrients become available to crop plants as well as other forms of life.

  • Antitranspirants are the compounds or the substances applied to the leaves of the plants for the purpose of reducing water loss (transpiration) without causing a momentous change in the various important processes of the plant such as growth and photosynthesis. Antitranspirants are generally classified into four distinct categories viz., stomatal closing type, filmforming type, reflecting type and growth retardant.

  • Farmers‟ participatory demonstrations on jute cultivation using zero tillage (ZT) technology were conducted in West Bengal through standardized conservation agriculture (CA)-jute protocols developed jointly by Uttar Banga Krishi Viswavidyalaya and International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT). The results of demonstration indicated a significant yield increase under ZT over conventional practices. On an average, an yield increase of 25.83-27.83% under zero tillage technology reflected the positive effect of demonstration over the existing practices.

  • The main aim of this thesis is to overcome the second limitation of the automatic plant identification (low recognition accuracy) by proposing novel and robust methods for plant recognition. For this, we first focus on improving the recognition accuracy of plant identification based on images of one sole organ. Among different organs of the plant, we select leaf as this organ is the most widely in the literature.

  • Groundnut is an important oil seed crop largely grown under rainfed conditions in India. Uneven distribution and or failure of monsoon rain affects the plant growth and reduces the productivity When crop is subjected to water stress it closes the stomata leading to reduced photosynthesis. Detection of plant water stress and assessing the possible effect on the growth and yield of crop is often difficult and challenging.

  • Coriander is an annual seed spice crop, which belongs to family Apiaceae. It is native of Mediterranean region. The aromatic characters of plants are due to presence of linalool compound in essential oil of seeds. The green leaves of coriander are used in salads and are a good source of vitamin A and vitamin C. Major active constituents of coriander essential oils and fatty oil. The essential oil content of the weight of ripe and a dried fruit of coriander varies between 0.03 and 2.6% and the content of fatty oil varies between 9.9 and 27.7%.
