The Government of Vietnam (GoV) has embarked on a massive tree plantation program. By 2010 it plans to establish an additional 5 million hectares of plantations on cleared land, over and above the current plantation estate of one million hectares, plus the equivalent of more than 50,000 hectares of community forests in scattered plantings. The GoV is committed to improving the quantity and quality of tree seed produced from its own seed orchards, which is a more sustainable strategy than depending on imported seed.

The Research Centre for Forest Tree Improvement (RCFTI) is a unit within the Forest Science Institute of Vietnam (FSIV) which specialises in tree improvement research and delivery of genetically improved seed and planting stock to meet the planting requirements of the Government of Vietnam (GoV) as well as community and private sector plantation programs. RCFTI carries out an active program of research at stations throughout Vietnam, with its principal research station at Ba Vi.

In 5 years this project has supported the propagation in the nursery and the three new Macadamia existing nurseries. In addition four major trials of different macadamias were established, about 1 ha each related to 14 macadamias suitable varieties, in four northern provinces of Vietnam.
