Point boundary value problems

The objective of the thesis is to develop the iterative method and combining it with other methods to study qualitative and especially the method of solving some two-point boundary problems for the fourth-order differential equations and systems, arising in beam bending theory without using condition of growth rate at infinity, Nagumo condition, etc. of the right-hand side function.

TWO-POINT BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS FOR HIGHER-ORDER LINEAR DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS WITH STRONG SINGULARITIES R. P. AGARWAL AND I. KIGURADZE Received 4 April 2004; Revised 11 December 2004; Accepted 14 December 2004 For strongly singular higher-order linear differential equations together with two-point conjugate and right-focal boundary conditions, we provide easily verifiable best possible conditions which guarantee the existence of a unique solution. MULTIPLICITY RESULTS FOR A CLASS OF ASYMMETRIC WEAKLY COUPLED SYSTEMS OF SECOND-ORDER ORDINARY DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS FRANCESCA DALBONO AND P. J. MCKENNA Received 1 November 2004 We prove the existence and multiplicity of solutions to a two-point boundary value problem associated to a weakly coupled system of asymmetric second-order equations. Applying a classical change of variables, we transform the initial problem into an equivalent problem whose solutions can be characterized by their nodal properties.

NONSMOOTH AND NONLOCAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS IN LATTICE-ORDERED BANACH SPACES ¨ SIEGFRIED CARL AND S. HEIKKILA Received 7 September 2004 We derive existence results for initial and boundary value problems in lattice-ordered Banach spaces. The considered problems can be singular, functional, discontinuous, and nonlocal. Concrete examples are also solved. 1. Introduction In this paper, we apply fixed point results for mappings in partially ordered function spaces to derive existence results for initial and boundary value problems in an ordered Banach space E.

EXISTENCE OF INFINITELY MANY NODAL SOLUTIONS FOR A SUPERLINEAR NEUMANN BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEM AIXIA QIAN Received 12 January 2005 We study the existence of a class of nonlinear elliptic equation with Neumann boundary condition, and obtain infinitely many nodal solutions. The study of such a problem is based on the variational methods and critical point theory. We prove the conclusion by using the symmetric mountain-pass theorem under the Cerami condition. 1. Introduction Consider the Neumann boundary value problem: − u + αu = f (x,u), ∂u = 0, ∂ν x ∈ Ω, (1.

ON BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS FOR SECOND-ORDER DISCRETE INCLUSIONS ´ PETR STEHLIK AND CHRISTOPHER C. TISDELL Received 8 October 2004 We prove some existence theorems regarding solutions to boundary value problems for systems of second-order discrete inclusions. For a certain class of right-hand sides, we present some lemmas showing that all solutions to discrete second-order inclusions satisfy an a priori bound. Then we apply these a priori bounds, in conjunction with an appropriate fixed point theorem for inclusions, to obtain the existence of solutions.

PERIODIC BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS ON TIME SCALES ´ PETR STEHLIK Received 20 April 2004 We extend the results concerning periodic boundary value problems from the continuous calculus to time scales. First we use the Schauder fixed point theorem and the concept of lower and upper solutions to prove the existence of the solutions and then we investigate a monotone iterative method which could generate some of them. Since this method does not work on each time scale, a condition containing a Lipschitz constant of right-hand side function and the supremum of the graininess function is introduced.

MAXIMUM PRINCIPLES FOR A FAMILY OF NONLOCAL BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS PAUL W. ELOE Received 21 October
MAXIMUM PRINCIPLES FOR A FAMILY OF NONLOCAL BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS PAUL W. ELOE Received 21 October 2003 and in revised form 16 February 2004 We study a family of three-point nonlocal boundary value problems (BVPs) for an nthorder linear forward difference equation. In particular, we obtain a maximum principle and determine sign properties of a corresponding Green function. Of interest, we show that the methods used for two-point disconjugacy or right-disfocality results apply to this family of three-point BVPs. 1.

ON THE EXISTENCE AND UNIQUENESS OF SOLUTIONS TO BOUNDARY VALUE PROBLEMS ON TIME SCALES JOHNNY HENDERSON, ALLAN PETERSON, AND CHRISTOPHER C. TISDELL Received 13 August 2003 and in revised form 11 February 2004 This work formulates existence, uniqueness, and uniqueness-implies-existence theorems for solutions to two-point vector boundary value problems on time scales. The methods used include maximum principles, a priori bounds on solutions, and the nonlinear alternative of Leray-Schauder. 1.
