  • Short oligonucleotides can be used as markers to tag and track DNA sequences. For example, barcoding techniques (i.e. Multiplex Identifiers or Indexing) use short oligonucleotides to distinguish between reads from different DNA samples pooled for high-throughput sequencing.

  • Despite ongoing reduction in genotyping costs, genomic studies involving large numbers of species with low economic value (such as Black Tiger prawns) remain cost prohibitive. In this scenario DNA pooling is an attractive option to reduce genotyping costs.

  • Pooling techniques, where multiple sub-samples are mixed in a single sample, are widely used to take full advantage of high-throughput DNA sequencing. Recently, Ranjard et al. (PLoS ONE 13:0195090, 2018) proposed a pooling strategy without the use of barcodes.

  • Chapter 4 - Assessing leadership and measuring its effects. Although this chapter focused on leadership research, there are several reasons it is relevant for leadership practitioners even though they are unlikely to actually conduct leadership research themselves. First, organizations can and do use a number of techniques to assess the values, personality, intelligence, and behaviors for any applicant pool.

  • An experiment was conducted, for three consecutive years to evaluate the effect of seed rates on yield and economic traits in Bold as well as Fine seeded rice variety in terms of Direct-Seeded technique. The experiment was laid out in Factorial Randomized Block design and replicated thrice. Study concluded that Pooled means of seed rates at Sakoli indicated that sowing of 75 kg seed ha-1 (3458 kg ha-1 ) was expressively higher in grain yield but was at par with sowing of 50 kg seedha-1 .

  • Pre-harvest foliar spray of chemicals and mulching is an important technique to extend the self-life, marketability as well as fruit quality of mango. Keeping in view the experiment was conducted under the experimental area of BAU, Sabour, Bhagalpur, Bihar, India during the two successive seasons of 2012 and 2013. Thirty-year-old mango cv. Langra trees were used with eight treatments along with polythene mulching (during October) and per-harvest chemicals were sprayed at 30 days before harvesting of fruits of CaCl2 6H2O @ 2, 4 and 6%,Ca (No3)2@ 4%, K2SO4@ 1.0% and borax @ 1.

  • The production of fine roots (diameter ≤2 mm) contributes considerably to carbon cycling in forest ecosystems. Fine roots constitute a significant organic matter pool with high net primary productivity and turnover. In this study, fine root decomposition, mortality, and production were estimated at a Quercus serrata Murr. plantation in Japan by using rates of diameter-dependent root mortality, decomposition, and the thickening method employed. Sequential soil core and litter bag techniques were used to collect field data. The experiments were set up in a 20×20 m plot.

  • Berseem, a nitrogen-fixing, annual, multicut forage crop cultivated around 2 million hectares areas of northern, central and eastern parts of India. Berseem has variability for pollination behavior however variation for morphological and agronomic traits are scare, perhaps, because of initially introduction of crop with narrow genetic base. Genetic variability have been fortified through introduction of exotic materials, intra-interspecific hybridization, induction of polyploidy and mutation. ICAR-Indian Grassland and Fodder Research Institute maintain >900 accessions of Trifolium spp.

  • This paper describes three building blocks of a technological Knowledge Management (KM) system that provides all relevant and practical means of supporting KM and thus differentiates itself from existing KM tools in goal and approach, as they usually deal with a limited range only. The three blocks described within this paper are: a virtual information pool, which utilizes Enterprise Application Integration (EAI), a single and central user interface providing ubiquitous access, and mechanisms to enrich the available data, essentially based on Artificial Intelligence and Data Mining techniques.

  • While the inspiration for my training technique was the revolutionary ideologies and methodologies that I learned in the 1980s from the Soviets, the inspiration for my training philosophy is relationships. Anyone who knows me knows that my priorities are faith, family, and friends, in that order. All the methods, all the equipment, all the experience, and all the athletic ideology are not what motivate me to do what I do. I do what I do because of the sincere love I have for the players that I train....

  • We explore how active learning with Support Vector Machines works well for a non-trivial task in natural language processing. We use Japanese word segmentation as a test case. In particular, we discuss how the size of a pool affects the learning curve. It is found that in the early stage of training with a larger pool, more labeled examples are required to achieve a given level of accuracy than those with a smaller pool. In addition, we propose a novel technique to use a large number of unlabeled examples effectively by adding them gradually to a pool. ...

  • When an item is published to a Semantic Bank, tags assigned to it are carried along. As a conse- quence, the bank’s members pool together not only the information items they have collected but also their organization schemes applied on those items. The technique of pooling together keywords has recently gained popularity through services such as del.icio.us [6], Flickr [25], and CiteULike [4] as a means for a community to collab- oratively build over time a taxonomy for the data they share.

  • The paper finds in a few cases a statistically significant negative relationship between some measures of central bank financial strength and inflation. Nevertheless, the results lack robustness with respect to the choice of alternative measures of financial strength and the econometric technique. At the same time, the relationship – if there is any – is found to be non-linear, with only substantial financial weakness being associated with higher inflation.

  • Vaginal pool smear: The aspiration can be performed after the introduction of unlubricated speculum. The technique allows collection of cells under direct vision from posterior fornix pool. When a speculum is not employed the pipette is gently introduced in to the vagina until resistance is encountered. It is important to compress the suction bulb during the introduction of the pipette to avoid collecting the cellular material of the lower vaginal origin. The cellular material is spread on a clean glass slide and fixed immediately.

  • There is a global trend of falling household sizes over time, though an international comparison quickly reveals that this reduction is not uniform across countries. Apart from tradition, economic variables are influential in determining how many people live together in one household. We have tried to capture this relationship with a pooled cross-section of 38 countries and data for different years between 1960 and 2006. The dependent variable is the average household size.

  • Computed tomography (CT) is the mainstay of cancer imaging outside of the central nervous system. Advances in multidetector CT (MDCT) technology have had a profound impact on its diagnostic capabilities. Such techniques as multiphase, single breath-hold imaging, CT angiography (CTA), volume rendering and virtual colonography owe their success to the development of multidetector arrays with continuously moving gantries.

  • Many of the techniques that have been developed have already been used to study the extent and distribution of variation in species gene-pools and to investigate evolutionary and taxonomic relationships among plant populations. With the development of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) based techniques, in particular, numerous molecular technologies have been, and still are being, developed, which can be used for the detection, characterization, and evaluation of genetic diversity in plant populations.
