Poppy seed

Line × Tester analysis was carried out using 13 lines and 3 testers to estimate heterosis on seed yield and its contributing characters in Opium Poppy. The 39 resulting hybrids along with their parents were evaluated in Randomized Block Design during Rabi 2019-2020. The analysis of variance revealed the presence of variability among parents and crosses for the characters studied.

A field experiment was conducted during rabi season of 2016-17 at Research Farm, Rajasthan College of Agriculture, MPUAT, Udaipur to study “ Genetic Variability and Path Analysis in Opium poppy (Papaver somniferum L.)” was carried out using 25 genotypes were planted in randomized block design including 2 checks. The data obtained were subjected to analysis of variance, estimation of different variability parameters and path coefficient analysis. The observations were recorded on five randomly selected plants for twelve characters.

An investigation was carried out using 20 opium genotypes, to study character association between fourteen characters and their direct and indirect effect on seed yield and latex yield independently. Association study indicated that seed yield per plant had significant positive correlation with diameter of main capsule (0.60) and latex yield per plant (0.60). This study proved that higher quality poppy seed oil can be produced with acceptable yield by applying the cold pressing technique coupled with a preroasting process.
