Post-natal depression

The study examined the socioeconomic barriers affecting mothers’ motivation to seek medical PPD treatment using a descriptive correlational research design. A purposive sampling technique was used to recruit eighteen (18) mothers aged 20 - 39 years old who scored below 20 on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS).

Remifentanil has been suggested for its short duration of action to replace standard opioids for induction of general anaesthesia in caesarean section. While the stabilizing effect of remifentanil on maternal circulation has been confirmed, its effect on postnatal adaptation remains unclear, as currently published studies are not powered sufficiently to detect any clinical effect of remifentanil on the newborn.

Infant crying and sleep problems (e.g. frequent night waking, difficulties settling to sleep) each affect up to 30% of infants and often co-exist. They are costly to manage and associated with adverse outcomes including postnatal depression symptoms, early weaning from breast milk, and later child behaviour problems.

Anticipatory guidance around the management of sleep and crying problems in early infancy has been shown to improve both infant behaviour and parent symptoms of postnatal depression. Digital technology offers platforms for making such programs widely available in a cost-efficient manner.

Prenatal and postnatal depressive symptoms are common in expectant and new mothers and fathers. This study examined the association between four patterns of probable perinatal depression (mother depressed, father depressed, both depressed, neither depressed) in co-parenting mothers and fathers and their children’s internalizing and externalizing behaviours at 24 and 36 months of age.

Postnatal depression (PND) is an important health problem of global relevance for maternal health and impacts on the health and wellbeing of the child over the life-course. Multinational data is hard to locate, the economic burden of PND on health care systems have been calculated in several countries, including Canada and in the UK. In Canada, health and social care costs for a mother with PND were found to be just over twice that of mothers with no mental illness.

Previous research has demonstrated that making music can enhance positive emotions as well as support positive psychological functioning. However, studies tend to be limited by lack of comparison with other psychosocial interventions. This study builds on a three-arm randomised controlled trial (RCT) that demonstrated that group singing for mothers and babies, but not group creative play, can lead to faster recovery from moderatesevere symptoms of postnatal depression than usual care.

Infant mental health is a significant public health issue as early adversity and exposure to early childhood stress are significant risk factors that may have detrimental long-term developmental consequences for the affected children. Negative outcomes are seen on a range of areas such as physical and mental health, educational and labor market success, social network and establishing of family.

In 1996 Warner et al. (27) demonstrated that in the UK the prevalence of psychiatric morbidity in the postnatal period varied between 10-15%. With regards to postnatal depression, a systematic literature review carried out by Robertson et al. (28), found that the rates of both, first onset and severe depression were three times higher in the postnatal period than during other periods of women's lives. In a large proportion of women with postnatal depression, symptoms persist for at least a year postpartum.

Studies conducted in HICs indicate a prevalence of 10-15% of perinatal mental disorders (11, 12). It has been suggested that rates of first onset and severe depression are three times higher in the postnatal period than in other periods of women's lives (13). More recently, Gavin et al. (14) confirmed those findings, suggesting that the rates are particularly high during the first trimester following childbirth.

Over the last decade or two, however, there has been increasing awareness on the impact of emotional distress during pregnancy—growing recognition that the incidence of depression during pregnancy is at least as high as it is postnatally (Faisal-Cury & Menezes, 2007; Marcus, 2009), that the majority of cases of postnatal depression begin during pregnancy (Heron et al.

Since the recognition of the importance of antenatal as well as postnatal depression, a number of studies have looked at the prevalence of depression among pregnant women in the developed and developing world. Prevalence rates vary because of a variety of methodological factors.

Although most of the research and clinical attention has been on unipolar depression among antenatal and postnatal women, there is evidence that women with bipolar disorders are at increased risk of postnatal psychosis, and women who have depressive symptoms should be screened for bipolar disorder and monitored for elevated mood. However, there is no consensus on the most effective screening method, with a variety of possible tools but no one well validated in antenatal women (Chessick & Dimidjian, 2010)....

The line between depressive and anxiety disorders in perinatal as well as general populations is often blurred; when the EPDS has been factor-analyzed, although there are separate factors corresponding to depression and anxiety, several items have moderate loadings on both factors (Swalm, et al., 2010). Some services refer to antenatal or postnatal “distress” rather than attempt to differentiate depression from anxiety, and often women report a mix of anxious and depressed symptoms.
