Precision farming development

The development of automated farming systems in precision agriculture has been attracting increasing research interest. In this paper, we present an automatic system for crop culture and monitoring based on the Internet of Robotic Things (IoRT).

Open-field farming involves successive major processes such as preparation of soil, planting the seed, adding pesticides and fertilizers, irrigation, cultivation, and harvest. The main aim of all processes is to achieve maximum yield out of the available agricultural landscape. It is necessary to collect geo-referenced descriptive data on soil characteristics, such as soil penetration resistance and electrical conductivity before starting all these processes.

Escalated food demands propelled by the ever increasing population demands for increase in crop production. But problems like labour shortages, high input costs and conventional farming practices makes agriculture economically unviable and resulted in its decline, especially in vulnerable communities of the developing world. Use of heavy machinery has been in the increase to tackle the problems of labour shortages but have adverse effects on environment due to soil compaction and the adverse effect on global warming owing to high fossil fuel use.

A field experimentwas carried out at Precision Farming Development Center (PFDC), at Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. The experiment was laid out in split plot design with three replications. The treatments composes of three drip irrigation levels at 1.0, 0.8 and 0.6 E pan as main plots and four mulches viz., polythene mulch, paddy straw, dried leaves and no mulch assigned to sub plots.

A field experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of irrigation levels using drip irrigation system for Lettuce crop grown under polyhouse and in open field condition during winter season (November-February) for two consecutive years (2014-15 and 2015- 16) at the Experimental Farm area of Precision Farming Development Centre Project, Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur, India. Reference evapotranspiration was estimated using FAO-56 Penman Monteith approach.

Low cost technology offers an excellent opportunity to grow high value crops during off-season with maximum input use efficiency. This has special relevance in the present day scenario of shrinking land and water resources. At Precision Farming Development Centre, NAU, Navsari technologies related to protected cultivation have been developed. These comprise of basically low (naturally ventilated) and medium cost (fan pad cooling system) greenhouses, in which former type does not require power supply or cooling mechanism.

Root-knot nematodes (RKN) have more than 3000 species of potential host range. The majority of the damage to crop plants is caused by Meloidogyne incognita. This experiment investigates the development of standard module for the management of root knot nematode tomato grown under precision farming system; Application of bio nematicides suppressed the pathogenic effect of root knot nematode and significantly reduced gall index and population density of M. incognita in roots and soil.

An experiment was conducted at experimental field of Precision Farming Development Center, Agricultural Research Center, Swami Keshwanand Rajasthan Agricultural University, Beechwal, Bikaner during the year 2014-15 and 2015-16. The experiment was carried out in Completely Randomized Block Design (Factorial) with three replications. The experiment consist of three water regime viz. 0.6 V, 0.8 V and 1.0 Volume of water through drip irrigation and four treatment of mulch viz. Black, silver, Dark red and without mulch . Result revealed that the maximum average yield per plant and yield per ha.

The present experiment was conducted at Hi-tech greenhouse of Precision farming development center of the Department of Horticulture, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar (Haryana) during the year 2016-17 and 2017-18.Strawberry plants were inoculated with different strains of Pseudomonas and plants inoculated with Pseudomonas strains fertilized with 75% RDF. The mini-tractor operated drip lateral installer and retriever was fabricated at department of farm machinery and power engineering, CAET, Junagadh agricultural university, Junagadh. A drip line installer and retriever were developed for small fields. One operator can install drip line on or just beneath the soil surface to precisely irrigate crops after planting and retrieve the drip line after irrigation is no longer needed for the season.

Twenty eight (28) soil samples from different polyhouses were collected from precision farming development Centre (PFDC) Leh, situated in the cold arid Ladakh region and were analyzed for different soil properties and its fertility status. It is apparent from the study that the majority of soils are rich in organic carbon, available nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulphur and low in available zinc. Among soil properties, organic carbon content had a positive correlation on the availability of nutrients.

India uses only 10% agricultural equipment’s as conducted survey in Year 2012. Now a day’s India has second rank worldwide in farm output. Agriculture like forestry and fishers accounted for 13.7GDP (Gross Domestic Product) in 2013, about 50% of the total man power. Precision sowing has been a major thrust of agricultural engineering research for many years; however, most of the research and development work has dealt with seeders for agronomic crops. The precision farming including plasticulture applications has proven its worth in realizing more output per unit of inputs and resources bestowed on to land. As an alternative to raise production and productivity especially to compete global trade and meet out own requirements. Cabbage is grown extensively in summers in Ladakh region and is stored for winters. Due to lack of scientific know how, improved varieties and modern precision farming techniques, crop yield and quality is comparatively low.
