Ebook "Reaction kinetics: Exercises, programs and theorems (Mathematica for deterministic and stochastic kinetics)" is aimed at chemists, engineers, and mathematicians interested in the interdisciplinary field of formal reaction kinetics, an important subfield of mathematical chemistry. Reaction kinetics studies the evolution of reacting species; it can predict time-dependent and stationary behavior, and it can provide a framework for collecting data economically.

The study of the asymptotic behavior of dynamical systems arising from mechanics and physics is a capital issue, as it is essential, for practical applications, to be able to understand and even predict the long-time behavior of the solutions of such systems.

Ebook "Melt rheology and its applications in the plastics industry (Second edition)" provides all the information that is needed for the intelligent application of rheology in the development of new polymers, the determination of molecular structure and the correlation of processability with laboratory test data. Theory and equations are limited to what is essential for the use of rheology in the characterization of polymers, the development of new plastics materials and the prediction of plastics processing behavior.

Model Predictive Control (MPC) refers to a class of algorithms that optimize the future behavior of the plant subject to operational constraints. The merits of the class algorithms include its ability to handle imposed hard constraints on the system and perform on-line optimization. This thesis investigates design and implementation of continuous time model predictive control using Laguerre polynomials and extends the design approaches proposed in to include intermittent predictive control, as well as to include the case of the nonlinear predictive control.

For advanced research reactor designs that have a high core power with downward coolant flow in the core, it is important to analyze a unique postulated pipe break scenario under sub-atmospheric pressures. In order to benchmark the capability of thermal–hydraulic codes such as TRACE to predict flow behavior under these conditions, we must first compare TRACE analyses to reference experimental data for air–water flow near atmospheric pressure and temperature conditions.

We present a novel approach, the Local Edge Machine, for the inference of regulatory interactions directly from time-series gene expression data. We demonstrate its performance, robustness, and scalability on in silico datasets with varying behaviors, sizes, and degrees of complexity. Moreover, we demonstrate its ability to incorporate biological prior information and make informative predictions on a well-characterized in vivo system using data from budding yeast that have been synchronized in the cell cycle.

In this study, a feed-forward back-propagation Artificial Neural Network (ANN) is used to predict the stress relaxation and behavior of creep for bimaterial microcantilever beam for sensing device. Results obtained from ANSYS® 8.1 finite element (FE) simulations, which show good agreement with experimental work [1], is used to train the neural network. Parametric studies are carried out to analyze the effects of creep on the microcantilever beam in term of curvature and stress developed with time.

Mothers are important mediators of children’s physical activity (PA) level and risk of obesity, however previous studies of maternal perceptions of child PA have been limited. Furthermore, it is unknown if maternal perceptions of child PA are predicted by family, mother and child characteristics.

Extremely preterm infants (≤ 28 weeks gestation) commonly require endotracheal intubation and mechanical ventilation (MV) to maintain adequate oxygenation and gas exchange. Given that MV is independently associated with important adverse outcomes, efforts should be made to limit its duration.

Known as one of the key risk measures, volatility has attracted the interest of many researchers. These aim, in particular, to estimate and explain its evolution over time. Several results reveal that volatility is characterized, among other things, by its asymmetric variations (Chordia and Goyal 2006, Mele 2007, Shamila et al 2009, etc.). In this article, we seek to analyze and predict the volatility of the BRVM through these two indices. The data used are daily and start from the period from 04 January 2010 to 25 May 2016.

For the first time in economic research, the present experimental study confronted participants with the task to predict stock prices ex ante in order to analyze the interrelation of the behavioral anomalies overconfidence and correlation neglect. The study shows that the participants considerably overestimate their accuracy of forecasting (overconfidence). Almost half of all participants (42.2%) disregard the correlation among return developments for different financial instruments (correlation neglect).

Many offshore structures are subjected to overturning moments due to wind load, wave pressure, and ship impacts. Also most of retaining walls are subjected to horizontal forces and bending moments, these forces are due to earth pressure. For foundations in such structures, usually a combination of vertical and batter piles is used. Little information is available in the literature about estimating the capacity of piles under uplift. In cases where these supporting piles are not vertical, the behavior under axial pullout is not well established.

The paper presents an analysis of roadway factors and posted speed limits that affect the operating speed at multi-lane highways in Egypt. Field data on multi-lane highways in Egypt are used in this investigation. The analysis considers two categories of highways. The first consists of two desert roads (Cairo–Alexandria and Cairo–Ismailia desert roads) and the second consists of two agricultural roads (Cairo–Alexandria and Tanta–Damietta agricultural roads). The paper includes three separate relevant analyses.

This paper discusses the usefulness of artificial neural networks (ANNs) for response surface modeling in HPLC method development. In this study, the combined effect of pH and mobile phase composition on the reversed-phase liquid chromatographic behavior of a mixture of salbutamol (SAL) and guaiphenesin (GUA), combination I, and a mixture of ascorbic acid (ASC), paracetamol (PAR) and guaiphenesin (GUA), combination II, was investigated. The results were compared with those produced using multiple regression (REG) analysis.

Recent wide acceptance of e-Portfolios has occurred because researchers believe it helps promote students’ learning in higher education. This study uses goal orientation theory to investigate the relationship between goal orientations, metacognitive strategies, and enjoyment when students use ePortfolio. This paper contributes to research by goal orientation, metacognitive strategies and enjoyment to explain student learning behavior when using ePortfolio to providing further evidence. A sample of 219 university students took part in this research to verify the proposed model.

In recent years, there has been a growing increase in using Learning Management System (LMS) by universities. However, its utilization by students is limited in Malaysia. The main purpose of the present study is to develop and test a model that predicts LMS utilization by Malaysian higher education students. Based on the Technology Acceptance Model, the study investigated the relationships among six constructs (system interactivity, technical support, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, behavioral intention to use and LMS use) through structural equation modelling.

In the case of monolithic fuel, this issue was addressed by eliminating, as much as possible, the interfacial area between U-Mo and aluminum. Based on scoping irradiation test data, a fuel plate system composed of solid U-10Mo fuel meat, a zirconium diffusion barrier, and Al6061 cladding was selected for development. Developmental testing of this fuel system indicates that it meets core criteria for fuel qualification, including stable and predictable swelling behavior, mechanical integrity to high burnup, and geometric stability.
