While many states will commit to protect this right, a large number of others have enacted laws that limit or outright ban abortion within their borders. Bupivacaine, an amid-type local anesthetic, is widely used for clinical patients especially in pregnant women. In addition to neurotoxicity effect of bupivacaine, it can cross the placenta, accumulates in this tissue and retained in fetal tissues. Nevertheless, whether bupivacaine can cause neurotoxicity in fetus remains unclear.

Gestational Diabetes has been defined as any degree of glucose intolerance with an onset, or first recognition during pregnancy (Beckmann et al., 2005). GDM affects between 2% to 5% of pregnant women. Increasing levels of plasma glucose are associated with birth weight above the 90th percentile, and primary caesarean deliveries and neonatal hyperglycemia. Risk factors for GDM include a history of macrosomia, strong family history of diabetes, and obesity.
