Infants born extremely preterm are defined as a birth under 28 weeks gestational age. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is the most common lung complication in this population and manyfactors can contribute to the development of BPD. The objective of this study was to identify the prevalence of BPD and to analyse the related factors of BPD in extremely preterm infants.

Parent-infant interaction is highly recommended during the preterm infant hospitalisation period in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Integrating culturally sensitive healthcare during hospitalisation of pre‑ term infants is critical for positive health outcomes. However, there is still a paucity of evidence on parental experience regarding cultural practices that can be integrated into preterm infant care in the NICU.

The use of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in preterm infants is becoming increasingly common. The use of cannula in NIV can cause ulceration of the nasal bridge with the current practices using the thin foam patches. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of hydrocolloid nasal dressing pads in preventing nasal ulceration comparing to that of the thin foam patches.

To evaluate the effect of paid family leave in California on statewide rates of preterm birth, low birthweight, postneonatal mortality, and overall infant mortality. Data Sources: Live birth and death certificates from all in-hospital deliveries occurring in California (state exposed to the family leave policy) and two unexposed states (Missouri and Pennsylvania) from 1999 to 2008 (n = 6 164 203).

Giant umbilical cord, defined as a cord diameter of more than 5 cm, is an extremely rare malformation. There are few case reports of giant umbilical cord often associated with patent urachus duct or cystic malformation. These cases are usually managed by surgical excision and repair of patent urachus or cyst resection.

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in premature infants is one of the leading causes of death. Surfactant replacement therapy has been the mainstay of treatment for preterm infants with RDS. This study aimed to evaluate the results of surfactant therapy for premature infants with RDS at the Pediatric Center of Hue Central Hospital.

Preterm neonates are at higher risk of developing inguinal hernia, and have an increased risk of periop‑ erative adverse events. Laryngeal mask airway (LMA) is claimed to be associated to decreasing perioperative respira‑ tory complications compared to endotracheal tube (ETT) in infants under one year of age receiving minor surgery; thus, we conducted a retrospective survey in former preterm neonates below 5000 g to compare the respiratory complications between LMA and ETT in general anesthesia for inguinal hernia surgeries.

Deleted in malignant brain tumors 1 (DMBT1) is an innate defence protein expressed in the lungs of preterm infants and adults. Recent studies showed that DMBT1 is important in angiogenesis and can bind to different growth factors including VEGF.

Aerosol therapy in relation to retinopathy of prematurity in mechanically ventilated preterm infants
Aerosol administration is increasingly being used as a therapeutic intervention for mechanically ventilated preterm infants. However, the effects of inhalation therapy on retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) have not yet been explored.

Uncertainly prevails with regard to the use of inhalation or instillation steroids to prevent bronchopulmonary dysplasia in preterm infants. The meta-analysis with sequential analysis was designed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of airway administration (inhalation or instillation) of corticosteroids for preventing bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in premature infants.

Maternal stress following the birth of an infantis well acknowledged. It is particularly so when infants are born prematurely as their mothers cannot fully take on their parenting role until their infant(s) is discharged from neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).

Preterm infants born 30 to 33 weeks’ gestation often require early support with intravenous fluids because of respiratory distress, hypoglycemia or feed intolerance. When full feeds are anticipated to be reached within the first week, risks associated with intravenous delivery mode and type must be carefully considered.

With the increase in hospitalization of premature infants in emergency departments and the painful procedure in these sectors, appropriate methods of pain relief are required. This study aimed to compare the effect of oral dextrose and facilitated tucking in the reduction of pain during heel sticks in premature infants and assess their effectiveness and feasibility for use in emergency settings.
