Problem Solving action
-
All mathematics books have problems, and most of them have word problems. Many students have difficulties when attempting to solve word problems. One reason is that they do not have a specific plan of action. A mathematician, George Polya (1887-1985), wrote a book entitled How To Solve It, explaining a four-step process that can be used to solve word problems. This process is explained in Lesson 1 of this book and is used throughout the book. This process provides a plan of action that can be used to solve word problems found in all mathematics courses.

The thesis studied the development and implementation of the conceptual Continuous Improvement Teamworking (CIT) Model for strategic performance improvement in retail banking operations. The investigation using of a dominant qualitative to a Less-dominant quantitative approach as a mixed-method strategy revealed the importance of the CIT Model realised through the CTIO (Concern-Task-Interaction-Outcome) Problem-Solving Cycle. The CTIO Cycle is a variant form of the traditional Deming-Shewhart PDCA (Plan-Do-Check-Action) Cycle.

The aim of the study was to solve the students’ problems in speaking lesson by using task-based activities. Then, the first objective was to verify the effectiveness of using task-based learning on the speaking performance of the 11th grade students at Diem Thuy high school. Specifically, it investigated whether TBL exerted any influence on students’ performance in speaking classes. The second objective was to explore students’ opinions towards the use of task-based learning in speaking lessons.

The SPST-A was structured into five subscales so as to assess an adolescent’s ability to recognize an effective solution among a variety of responses and his/her performance quality of various dimensions (both constructive and dysfunctional) of social problem solving. The SPST-B was divided into two scales to assess overall problem-solving abilities: Problem affect-cognitions (orientation) and problem-solving actions (strategies or skills).

The cross product of two vectors is important concept which is applied in solving many problems when using the spatial coordinate method. By applying the Theory of Didactical Situations in Mathematics, the authors designed teaching situation that they call “the cross product of two vectors concept” in which students learn through situations that involve action, communication and validation.

The comparatively late rise of the theory of probability shows how hard it is to grasp, and the many paradoxes show clearly that we, as humans, lack a well grounded intuition in this matter. In probability theory there is a great deal of art in setting up the model, in solving the problem, and in applying the results back to the real world actions that will follow.

Ubiquitous learning allows students to learn at any time and any place. Adaptivity plays an important role in ubiquitous learning, aiming at providing students with adaptive and personalized learning material, activities, and information at the right place and the right time. However, for providing rich adaptivity, the student model needs to be able to gather a variety of information about the students.
