Quality traits in bread wheat

Identifying the loci and dissecting the genetic architecture underlying wheat yield- and qualityrelated traits are essential for wheat breeding. A genome-wide association study was conducted using a highdensity 90 K SNP array to analyze the yield- and quality-related traits of 543 bread wheat varieties.

Fifty germplasm of bread wheat used to study the nature and magnitude of genetic divergence using Mahalanobis’s D2 statistics. The data for twelve important quantitative traits recorded from the genotypes raised in Randomized Block Design having three replications. The fifty genotypes were grouped into eight clusters. Cluster I was largest with fourteen genotypes followed by cluster IV with ten genotypes.

10 bread wheat genotypes were crossed in diallel fashion excluding reciprocals. The F1s and the parental lines were then utilised for combining ability analysis. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed the presence of significant variation for all four quality traits. ANOVA showed highly significant estimates of mean square for general combining ability for sedimentation value, hectolitre weight and phenol colour reaction however for protein content it was significant.

Five breeding lines and 4 cultivars were grown in replicated trials at 1 location in 1999-2000 and 2 locations in 2000-2001 cropping seasons in İzmir in order to determine the usefulness of a safety-first selection index in making selection among high yielding wheat genotypes for test weight and thousand-kernel weight.
