When large numbers of asylum seekers immigrate to a country, civil society is encouraged to contribute to their integration. A subgroup of asylum seekers comprising lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or queer (LGBTQ) refugees are specifically deemed vulnerable to developing health and integration problems due to the double stigma of being a sexual/gender minority and a refugee.

Studies throughout Europe have shown that asylum-seeking children and adolescents (ASC) are at risk of developing mental disorders. The most common mental-health problems in ASC include posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), internalizing symptoms such as depression and anxiety, and externalizing behaviour.

As many refugee minors have gone/go through stressful life experiences and uncertainty, one might expect mental health issues, including self-injury. However, literature on non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in refugee minors is scarce. This study explores the prevalence, methods, and functions of NSSI in refugee minors in Belgium, and compares research results to the existing literature on NSSI in Western adolescents.

Current research on treatment predictors and long-term effects of trauma-focused interventions for (unaccompanied) refugee minors is limited. This secondary analysis of a recent randomised controlled trial (RCT), evaluating the trauma-focused group intervention “Mein Weg” (English “My Way”) compared to usual care, investigated several refugee-specific factors such as treatment predictors and sustainability of treatment gains.

Unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) seeking asylum show high rates of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety. In addition, they experience post-migration stresss like an uncertain residence status. Therefore, psychotherapeutic interventions for URMs are urgently needed but have scarcely been investigated up to now.

In the last few decades there has been a growing criticism of the mental health and social care services available to users, this includes those from minority ethnic and refugee groups in the UK. This has resulted in the rise of user groups and forums to put forward their agenda’s and challenge the very structure and provision available.

The growing body of research on the challenges presented to mental health services by refugee and asylum seeking populations is increasingly necessary, however, such research focuses mainly on organisational or institutional processes rather than user perceptions and beliefs concerning health care. Very little is known about refugee and asylum seekers user involvement in mental health services and the impact on the accessibility to care among this user population.

Another major global trend – and one not easily controlled – is the global rise in temperature. Most debates are currently focused on the extent of human agency and on the nature of the causes of climate change. Should climate change have the effects popularly predicted – by no means a fait accompli – then geostrategy will return as an important factor in interna- tional politics.

A vast proliferation of information is currently being produced in attempts to improve patient education and access to care in underserved communities. Health educators, providers, and institutions produce materials in various print, audio and video formats, in common and lesser- known languages of immigrants, refugees and ethnic minority communities. Information tailored to African Americans, indigenous tribes, LGBT communities, people with limited literacy, and other distinctive populations is becoming easier to find.
