Ebook "Bismuth-mediated organic reactions (Topics in current chemistry, Volume 311)" deals with only one element of the periodic table but still contains a large amount of new knowledge, all of which comes from a single element: bismuth! The history of bismuth in synthetic chemistry is relatively short. The most important features of this element, arising from its low toxicity and high reactivity, were first highlighted only recently.

Pyrethroid is an insecticide which is widely used for household pests. Even though they are relatively less toxic to humans, reports of accidental poisoning are not uncommon. Cases of anosmia, tremors and arrhythmias after pyrethroid exposure have been reported; however auditory hallucinations have not been presented yet.

Layer-structured SnSe is known as a potential semiconductive material because it is not toxic, relatively abundant in the earth crust and possess unique electronic, optoelectronic properties. This material is also broadly used for many applications such as photodetector, fire detector, thermoelectric devices, energy storing equipment, etc.

Keratomycosis is a relatively common, sight threatening condition in horses, where treatment is often prolonged and costly. Subconjunctival (SCo) injections offer less resistance to drug diffusion than the topical route, resulting in better penetration to the ocular anterior segment.

The majority of oxaliplatin taken up by L. minor (about 66 to 84%) was internalised, presumably through passive diffusion and, possibly, uptake through transporters. Among the end-points tested, only relative growth rate of frond area and ion leakage were adversely affected at the medium and/or high concentrations employed.

Barley is relatively sensitive to Aluminum (Al) toxicity among cereal crops, but shows a wide genotypic difference in Al tolerance. The well-known Al-tolerant mechanism in barley is related to Al exclusion mediated by a citrate transporter HvAACT1 (Al-activated citrate transporter 1). A 1-kb insertion in the promoter region of HvAACT1 gene results in a dramatic increase of its expression level, which only occurs in some Al-tolerant cultivars. However, Al-tolerant Tibetan wild barley accession XZ29 did not have the 1-kb insertion.

A Pot culture experiment was conducted at Grape Research Station, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad to study the variability in salt tolerance of grape rootstocks (viz., Dogridge, Salt Creek, RS-19, SO4 and 1613-C) to different chloride salts viz., NaCl, KCl, MgCl2 and CaCl2 salts). The experiment was laid out in a FCRBD with three replications. The relative salt tolerance was assessed based on growth parameters, dry weight of root to shoot ratio and also on the ability of rootstocks to limit uptake of Na and Cl ions.

Cyanide is used to extract gold from gold-bearing ore, resulting in wastewater containing cyanide compounds which is released to a tailing storage facilities (TSF). Hydrogen Cyanide (HCN) is highly volatile and the most toxic form of cyanide. A large gold mine in Phichit Province, Thailand uses cyanide to extract gold from ore, and cyanide contaminated waste product is released into a TSF, which is allowed to have a maximum cyanide concentration of 20 mg/l. There is great concern whether airborne HCN emissions from TSF pose a public health hazard.

Anthracycline-induced cardiac toxicity is a cause of significant morbidity and early mortality in survivors of childhood cancer. Current strategies for predicting which children are at greatest risk for toxicity are imperfect and diagnosis of cardiac injury is usually made relatively late in the natural history of the disease.

Plant protection using synthetic pesticides has become one of the essential components of modern agriculture. Although need based judicious application of pesticides have made a significant impact on increasing crop productivity in agricultural sector by combating heavy losses due to pest infestation but there are lots of serious associated bottlenecks with pesticides. The major issues related to pesticide application are environmental pollution, health hazards, pest resurgence, secondary pest outbreak etc.

Agriculture is going through a profound revolution worldwide due to increasing world demand for food, higher costs of energy and other inputs, environmental pollution problems, and instability of cropping systems. The importance of plant functioning can be realized from the facts that knowledge of mineral nutrition of plants has opened new vistas for fertilizer practices. The detection of deficiencies and toxicity of particular mineral nutrient element has enabled us to make adequate soil amendments and root nutrient absorption for better plant growth.

Differences in health risks between different styles of smokeless tobacco products (STPs) have prompted interest in their relative levels of toxic chemicals. We report here the development of methods for the analysis of STPs for coumarin and for α-angelica lactone (α-AL), both of which have been included in various published lists of tobacco toxicants.
