The efficacy of multi-ion doped nano-hydroxyapatite coated titanium intramedullary pins for long bone fracture repair in dogs was studied clinically. The present study was conducted on twenty-four dogs, accommodating six dogs in each group and were subjected to open reduction and internal immobilization with titanium intramedullary pins. Blood samples were collected on 0 day, at 3,6, and 9thweeks post operatively in all the groups to evaluate the levels of serum calcium, phosphorus and alkaline phosphatase.

In fracture treatment, adequate fixation of implants is crucial to long-term clinical performance. Bisphosphonates (BP), potent inhibitors of osteoclastic bone resorption, are known to increase peri-implant bone mass and accelerate primary fixation. However, adverse effects are associated with systemic use of BPs.

Canines suffering from long bone fractures were immobilized by low density polypropylene (LDPP) splint and fiber glass cast. The study was conducted in clinical cases of 12 dogs suffering from long bone fractures. Animals were divided in two groups viz. Group I: Low density polypropylene (LDPP) splint (N=6) and Group II: Fiber Glass cast (N=6). Dogs immobilized with fiberglass casts attained full mobility and complete weight bearing on fractured limb earlier than the dogs treated with Low density polypropylene (LDPP) splints.

The present study was conducted on 12 dogs of either, sex, breed, aged between 1-8 years brought to T.V.C.C, Jabalpur having a diaphyseal fracture in any of the long bones i.e. Humerus, femur and tibia. The dogs were randomly divided into three equal groups irrespective of breed and sex. The radiographs in two standard views were taken to diagnose the fracture and to select optimum titanium pins. In all the three groups, the diaphyseal fractures were repaired with internal fixation using titanium elastic pin. In group I, the fracture was repaired by using the titanium pin alone.
