  • Molecular regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis plays an essential role in the fine tuning of seasonal estrus in Capra hircus. Noncoding RNAs (ncRNAs) are emerging as key regulators in sexual development and mammalian reproduction. In order to identify ncRNAs and to assess their expression patterns, along the HPG axis, we sequenced ncRNA libraries from hypothalamus, pituitary and ovary of three goats.

  • The process of alternative splicing provides a unique mechanism by which eukaryotes are able to produce numerous protein products from the same gene. Heightened variability in the proteome has been thought to potentiate increased behavioral complexity and response flexibility to environmental stimuli, thus contributing to more refined traits on which natural and sexual selection can act.

  • The clupeoid fishes are ecologically and commercially important fish species worldwide that exhibit a high level of population fluctuation, accompanied by alteration of reproductive traits. However, knowledge about their reproductive physiology in order to understand mechanisms underlying such population dynamics is limited.

  • Osteosarcoma strikes hundreds of people each year, of both advanced and younger ages, and is often terminal. Like many tumor types, these bone tumors will frequently undergo a neuroendocrine transition, utilizing autocrine and/or paracrine hormones as growth factors and/or promoters of angiogenesis to facilitate progression and metastasis.

  • Source and sink activity measured after anthesis in six poplar rice cultivars. The experiment was laid in randomized block design with six cultivars MTU-1001, MTU1010, MTU-7029, BPT-2231, BPT-3291 and BPT-5204 replicated four times. After anthesis, top three leaves separately, top three internodes collectively, panicle axis and grain of main culm were sampled at seven day interval and analysed for biochemical parameters that serve remobilization of nutrients. During the initial and later halves of the sampling, there was a shift in higher amylase activity from third to flag leaves.

  • Kisspeptin signaling is a potent regulator of the reproductive axis and an elicitor of gonadotropin-releasing hormone secretion. The present study assessed the effect of the peripheral administration of a kisspeptin antagonist (P234) on testosterone secretion in the adult male rhesus monkey.

  • In human and animal organisms, lead can cause reproductive problems beginning with pregnant females. The reproductive axis is particularly sensitive to lead, its influence resulting in a delayed sexual maturity due to biosynthesis suppression of the sexual steroids.

  • The skyline operator is important for several applications involving multicrite- ria decision making. Given a set of objects p1, p2, ... , pN, the operator returns all objects pi such that pi is not dominated by another object pj . Using the common example in the literature, assume in Figure 1 that we have a set of hotels and for each hotel we store its distance from the beach (x axis) and its price ( y axis). The most interesting hotels are a, i, and k, for which there is no point that is better in both dimensions. Borzsonyi et al. [2001] proposed an SQL syntax for...

  • Since the 2005 country case-study of Senegal, confidence has waned in the SWAp as a mechanism for effective coordination of donor support for the health sector. With frequent changes of the minister of health and senior staff impacting on the continuity of administration and policy directions, donors and MOH planners are looking to discussions around a proposed compact through IHP+ to provide a new focus for coordination.

  • In French-speaking Africa, as elsewhere, reproductive health programs have focused mainly on women. In recent years, however, recognition has grown that men have a sig- nificant influence on family reproductive decisions, that men themselves have substan- tial reproductive health needs, and that many men are interested in better reproductive health. Men also play an important role in reproductive health programs as managers and policy-makers.

  • UNFPA responds to emergencies in a wide range of situations and settings. The need might be to reach women in a refugee camp to work only with men, or to find internally displaced persons who are dispersed throughout the local population. Conditions may be hostile or hospitable, politically charged or on the path to peace; they are never easy.

  • There is no doubt that the protection of women during pregnancy and lactation must be one of the major priorities of health systems and social policies. The effect of women’s nutritional status on pregnancy outcomes is particularly strong, and adequate maternal nutrition is closely related to the survival and well-being of babies and children. However, not all women are mothers, and their nutritional and health needs go far beyond motherhood and reproduction. Women of all ages in developing countries face elevated risks of nutritional deficiencies.

  • Osteoporosis and fractures may increase due to hypoestrogenism in menopause and cytochrome P450 inducing AEDs. Recent studies suggest lower bone mineral density (BMD) in adults and children with epilepsy, irrespective of AED treatment. Both idiopathic epilepsy and symptomatic epilepsy are associated with reduced BMD, with the greatest reduction in symptomatic generalized epilepsy (Sheth & Hermann, 2008). However, the pathophysiological underlying mechanisms are far from understood and likely multifactorial.

  • Role of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis in the etiology of amenorrhea. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) secretion from the hypothalamus stimulates follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH) secretion from the pituitary to induce ovarian folliculogenesis and steroidogenesis. Ovarian secretion of estradiol and progesterone controls the shedding of the endometrium, resulting in menses and, in combination with the inhibins, provides feedback regulation of the hypothalamus and pituitary to control secretion of FSH and LH.
