Resistance against bacterial blight

Bacterial leaf blight (BLB) caused by the vascular pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) is one of the most serious diseases leading to crop failure in rice growing countries. A total of 37 resistance genes against Xoo has been identified in rice.

Cotton is one of the principal commercial crop and it is the back bone of national economy of our country. Cotton remains the most miraculous fiber and is still nature’s wonder fiber. Cotton is grown all around the globe, and is traded internationally as well. The production is influenced by the repeated out breaks of pest and diseases and these are the major factors responsible for lower yield of cotton in India.

The present study was carried out to screen the improved lines with the foreground markers of Xa21, xa13, xa5, Xa33 and Xa38 and the confirmed plants were evaluated for phenotypic resistance against the local isolate of BB under the controlled conditions. Further, the lines harboring BB resistance genes were evaluated for key-morphological traits to identify the superior genotypes.

The present study was conducted at the experimental farm of ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region, Patna, India in Kharif season 2016 with an objective to identify sheath blight and bacterial leaf blight disease resistance rice genotypes under submergence condition in middle Indo Gangetic Plain. The disease incidence was observed at maturity stages during Kharif season 2016. The incidence of sheath blight and bacterial leaf blight of paddy ranged from 18.6 to 39.0% and 15.3 to 34.0%, respectively.

Jumonji C (JmjC) domain-containing proteins are a group of functionally conserved histone lysine demethylases in Eukaryotes. Growing evidences have shown that JmjCs epigenetically regulate various biological processes in plants. However, their roles in plant biotic stress, especially in rice bacterial blight resistance have been barely studied so far.

In the present study, we have introgressed two major genes, viz., Xa21 and Pi54 conferring resistance against bacterial blight (BB) and blast, respectively into an Indian rice variety MTU1010. Breeding line of Akshyadhan (RP6132) possessing Xa21 and Pi54 was used to transfer the target traits into the susceptible parent MTU1010, which is highly susceptible to both BB and blast diseases, which limits its spread to the disease endemic areas.

Bacterial blight (BB) caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) is a devastating disease in rice worldwide. The resistance gene Xa7, which provides dominant resistance against the pathogen with avirulence (Avr) gene AvrXa7, has proved to be durably resistant to BB. A set of SSR markers were selected from the ‘‘gramene’’ database based on the Xa7M5 gene initial mapping region on chromosome 6.

Bacterial blight (BB) is a major disease of rice for which host resistance is the only effective solution. Pyramiding entails stacking multiple genes leading to the simultaneous expression of more than one gene in a variety to develop durable resistance Expression. Gene pyramiding is gaining considerable importance as it would improve the efficiency of plant breeding leading to the development of genetic stocks and precise development of broad spectrum resistance capabilities.

India is among the topmost rice producers and consumers in the world. Rice crop is susceptible to various bacterial diseases and one such commonly known disease is Bacterial Blight (BB) caused by the pathogen Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae (Xoo) and is known to severally impact rice crop yield. Rice variety HKR-47 is widely popular amongst rice farmers and consumers in Haryana because of its high yield, medium slender grains, and excellent cooking and eating qualities, however, HKR-47 exhibits less endurance to BB.

Alternaria leaf blight of tomato caused by Alternaria solani is a soil inhabiting and airborne pathogen responsible for considerable loss in tomato production. In the absence of resistant cultivars, the use of fungicides and biocontrol agents to control the disease is one exercise training. When there is an epidemic outbreak for some reason, perhaps the use of fungicides are one of the best options available. These fungicides must be used judiciously according to the need, type of body involved and availability of new fungicides.

Molecular analysis of 30 aromatic lines revealed presence of Xa4, xa5 and xa13 in twelve, two and five germplasm lines, respectively. Moreover, only xa5+xa13 gene combination was found to be present in two lines. Germplasm lines, ANP -44 (RAU 3073) and ANP-204 (Improved Pusa Basmati) showed presence of xa5 and xa13.
