This book presents the salient features of optic nerve disorders, encompassing optic neuritis, papilledema, ischemic optic neuropathies, compressive and infi ltrative optic neuropathies, traumatic optic neuropathies, nutritional and toxic optic neuropathies, hereditary optic neuropathies, and optic disc tumors. Chapters 1 to 9 outline key clinical aspects of each of these disorders. Chapter 10 illustrates some newer applications of optical coherence tomography (OCT) in monitoring optic nerve-related processes causing retinal nerve fi ber layer loss and in ruling out retinal disorders....

Over the past decade, treatment of neovascular age-related macular degeneration has evolved from overall retinal ablation to more targeted and retinal-sparing therapy, beginning with the advent of photodynamic therapy and continuing with the development of inhibitors to vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). This article summarizes the key clinical trials with photodynamic and anti- VEGF therapies to provide insight into and a framework around which we can choose the optimal treatments (including dosing) for our patients....

Examination of the optic fundi may provide direct information on a variety of conditions that affect the cardiovascular system. In patients with hypertension the retinal changes are classified according to the Keith–Wagner–Barker method. These changes reflect both atherosclerotic and hypertensive retinopathy. Initially, arterial narrowing is seen (grade 1), and subsequently the arteriolar diameters increase in relation to the venous diameters, manifested as arteriovenous nicking (grade 2 changes)....

In this context, the term dizziness is being used to describe disturbed ambulation. There may be mild associated lightheadedness, particularly with impaired sensation from the feet or poor vision; this is known as multiple-sensory-defect dizziness and occurs in elderly individuals who complain of dizziness only when walking. Decreased position sense (secondary to neuropathy or myelopathy) and poor vision (from cataracts or retinal degeneration) create an overreliance on the aging vestibular apparatus.

Abstract Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a vascular vitreoretinopathy that affects infants with short gestational age and low birth-weight. The condition is a multifactorial disease and is clinically similar to familial exudative vitreoretinopathy (FEVR), which is a bilateral hereditary eye disorder affecting full-term infants. Both of them are characterized by the abnormal vessel growth in the vitreous that can lead to vitreoretinal traction, retinal detachment and other complications resulting in blindness.
