  • In the present age of mass access to tertiary education, the pattern of declining returns to investment in tertiary education was observed in a growing number of countries that include Vietnam. This trend may avert individual investment in human capital formation, and thereby negatively affecting national economic growth and development. To contribute to addressing this problem, the current paper aims to analyse the factors that drive the decay in returns to investment in tertiary education in Vietnam.

  • Facebook will morph from a relatively private social space to a business entity driven by the bottom line. Brands will need to tread carefully as they explore these new opportunities. Some users will tolerate prominent advertising in return for free access to their friends and social connections, but others may balk at increased commercialization. Seeing their personal data sold for targeted advertising may cause resentment, unless brands deliver engaging content that is appropriate for this personal space.

  • Two other factors are likely to aid growth in the near term. 4 One is inventory investment. Throughout the current recession, businesses have reduced inventory investment substantially. Businesses have chosen to curtail production and run down existing stocks. This behavior has led to a situation where even just a return to normal behavior implies a substantial rise in inventory investment, and thus a powerful short-run impetus to growth. Renewed inventory investment should spur production and job creation throughout the economy.

  • Without net new jobs, however, the process is short-circuited. The painful results are most evident today in some European countries and in developing countries where an initial burst of technical-industrial growth has stagnated. In these situations, high unemployment has become so chronic that even many graduates of universities and technical schools cannot get a foothold in the workplace. The chance for these young people to develop their skills and contribute their ideas is deferred and, in many cases, lost.

  • Member States' performance is set to differ strongly this year and next. Heterogeneity in GDP and employment developments results from varying adjustment needs following the imbalances in the run-up to the crisis. In particular, the health of banking sectors and public finances as well as private debt and external deficits differ considerably across countries. While being low for the EU as a whole, financing costs have continued to diverge across Member States.

  • The human development aspects of the ECE industry also have a significant economic impact on California. Studies of the costs and long-term benefits of high-quality ECE programs have consistently found substantial savings derived over the course of years and decades from reduced need for remedial and special education, reduced incarceration rates, lower rates of teen pregnancy, and many other factors. Analyses of the costs and benefits of ECE have found impressive returns on investment to the public, ranging from $2.69 to $7.16 per dollar invested.

  • Traditionally, large distribution networks were developed by the Life Insurance Corporation of India and the Unit Trust of India for their own products. The LIC model involved engaging deeply with distributors and agents, by educating and equipping them to sell. Agents were well-compensated and penetration was deep. In return, the agents worked exclusively with LIC and did not sell other products. Unlike this, the mutual fund distribution network evolved in an open architecture mode.

  • However, the literature on brain drain (Mountford 1997; Stark et al 1997, 1998; Vidal 1998; Beine, Docquier and Rapoport 2001, 2008) argues that workers in the home country make their educational choices taking into account the return to education in the receiving country and their migration prospects. We study the selectivity of migrants when agents make joint decisions about how much to invest in education and whether to migrate.

It was estimated that it would take three years before these efforts produced a meaningful return on investment, if ever. In 2001, PSI granted Roberts and her team limited funding and internal support to launch YouthAIDS. YouthAIDS grew dramatically to become a multi-million dollar education and prevention program.

  • The success of non-profits stems from the support of social investors, whether individuals or institutions, who have turned to microfinance in a big way: in 2007, such investors put $4 billion into microfinance (CGAP, 2008), a total that has been rising fast. Social investors range from international financial institutions like the World Bank’s International Finance Corporation to major mutual fund families like TIAA-CREF, in addition to individuals investing $100 or so (at zero financial return) through internet-based sites like Kiva.org.

  • Sexuality education programs are relatively low-cost. A review of YRH programs in African countries found that such programs cost between US$0.30 and US$71 per year per person, with a median cost of about US$9 per person per year (World Bank, 2003). Moreover, recent studies have found that sexuality education programs offer a good return on investment. For example, a study in Honduras found that for each $1.00 invested in sexuality education to prevent HIV infection among youth, the program would generate up to $4.
