  • Belamcanda chinensis (L.) DC is a popular ornamental and medicinal plant belonging to the Iridaceae family. Its rhizomes are used in Vietnamese traditional medicine for the treatment of inflammation and respiratory disorders, such as asthma, tonsillitis, coughing, and pharyngitis. In this study, four iridal-type triterpenoid derivatives (1–4) and four isoflavonoids (5–8) have been isolated from the methanol extract of Belamcanda chinensis roots.

In this trial, different organic mulches viz., paddy straw, dry grass, coir pith along with plastic mulch were used as mulching material.

  • A field experiment was conducted at Horticultural Research Station, Adilabad (Northern Telangana Zone) of Telangana state for two consecutive years 2016 and 2017 to find out the performance of Salem variety of turmeric with two planting materials (Split and full rhizome) and three population levels (1,48,148, 74,074 and 98,765 plants ha-1 ) on raised beds. The two years study revealed that full rhizomes used as planting material showed significantly higher mean plant height of 34.20, 58.47, 80.61 and 82.68 cm at 60, 90, 120 and 150 DAP respectively.

  • In view of the high level of morphological diversity in fern species, assessment of genetic variation among 19 fern species was evaluated using ten inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers. The results suggested that the ISSR markers produced much better reproducible bands and were more efficient in grouping fern species. ISSR fragments generated 29 to 87 bands per primer. A total of 281 polymorphic bands generated 34.48 to 66.66 per cent polymorphism per primer. All germplasm were clearly differentiated by their ISSR fingerprints.

  • A batch type ginger washing-cum-peeling machine was developed and investigated for its use in the production line of bleached dry ginger. The machine used 2 hard nylon brush rollers that rotated at 200 rpm in opposite direction. The rhizomes got lifted and tumbled on the rollers, and the application of jets of water removed the soil and other foreign material from the surface of rhizomes and about 59% of the total peels. Output capacity of the machine was 13.86 kg/h with about 2% loss of edible material.

  • Three terpenes with Protostane type were isolated from the rhizomes of Alisma plantago- aquatica. The chemical structures of isolated compounds were characterized as 11 ,23S,24R,25- tetrahydroxyprotost-13(17)-en-3-one (alisol A, 1), 11 ,23S,25-trihydroxyprotost-13(17)-en-3- one-24R-yl acetate (alisol A acetate, 2), and 11 ,23S,24S-trihydroxyprotost-13(17),25-dien-3-one (alisol G, 3), by detailed analysis of the 1D- and 2D-NMR spectra such as 1 H-, 13 C-NMR, DEPT 90, DEPT135, HSQC, HMBC, 1 H- 1 H COSY, and by the Electronspray Ionization (ESI) mass spectrum.
