Ridge gourd [Luffa acutangula (L) Roxb.]
-
A study was carried out on heterosis for fruit yield and yield related traits in ridge gourd. Twenty eight F1 hybrids were generated by half diallel (excluding reciprocals) mating design. These F1 hybrids along with eight parents were evaluated in randomized block design with three replication at Horticulture farm, College of Agriculture, Bikaner and KVK farm, Bhartiya Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Fatehpur-Shekhawati, Sikar.

The present study was carried out for development of hybrids in ridge gourd for earliness and yield traits. Twenty eight crosses were developed through half diallel fashion. Evaluated the crosses and along with their parents in Randomized block design (RBD). Significant differences found in the analysis of variance for early and yield related traits which indicates enormous genetic variability present in the ridge gourd.

The analysis of variance for female and male parents exhibited (Table 1) significant difference for all the traits. The estimates of mean sum of squares due to Lines showed significant differences for all the traits except fruit rind thickness, fruit flesh thickness, fruit girth, total soluble solids (TSS) and total crude fiber content and in the male parents apart from these traits node to first female flower, sex ratio, vine length also indicating the presence of sufficient variability among the parents studied.

An investigation on evaluation of ridge gourd germplasm was carried out at College Orchard, Department of Vegetable Crops, Horticulture College and Research Institute, TNAU, Coimbatore. Totally thirty five ridge gourd genotypes were grouped into five clusters based on D2 values, which exhibited no association between geographical and genetic divergence.

The investigation was undertaken at Department of Horticulture, SHIATS, Allahabad, during the year 2014. The experiment was laid out in simple Randomized Block Design with 3 replications, 12 genotypes (6 genotypes from IIVR Varanasi and 6 local cultivators) separately. Studies showed that, significant effect on the minimum days to germination (3.53 days), days to first appearance of male and female flower (34.07 and 38.30 days), node number at which first male and female flower appear (5.60 and 11.53), sex ratio (34.00), length of main vine (5.30m), minimum days to first harvesting (43.

In the present investigation, 14 genotypes will be grown during rainy season 2016-2017 at the field experimentation centre of the Department of Horticulture, SHUATS, Allahabad (U.P.). The overall analysis reveals that fruit yield was positively and significant correlated with fruit percent, number of fruits per plant, fruit length, average fruit weight, fruit diameter, vine length at 90 days, sex ratio and rind thickness while selecting a good hybrid for enhancing the yield of ridge gourd.

The present study was carried out at Department of Horticulture, Agricultural College and Research Institute, Madurai during 2015-2016 to study the Combining ability estimates for growth, earliness, yield and quality parameters. Sixteen crosses obtained on Line × Tester approach were evaluated for fifteen traits. The variance due to sca was higher than the gca for all the characters, indicating the importance of non-additive gene action.

Ridge gourd yellow mosaic disease (RgYMD) caused by the strain of Tomato leaf curl New Delhi virus (ToLCNDV) is an emerging disease in India. Early detection of ToLCNDV in ridge gourd has great significance in the management of the disease. An innovative loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay was standardized for rapid detection of ToLCNDV. Assay was carried out using the set of six primers (F3, B3, FIP, BIP, LF and BF) specific to the coat protein (CP) gene of the virus.
