Species in the genus Armillaria (fungi, basidiomycota) are well-known as saprophytes and pathogens on plants. Many of them cause white-rot root disease in diverse woody plants worldwide. Mitochondrial genomes (mitogenomes) are widely used in evolutionary and population studies, but despite the importance and wide distribution of Armillaria, the complete mitogenomes have not previously been reported for this genus.

Interaction between wilt, root rot and root knot complex in lentil was evaluated and formulated its management strategies. Population of plant parasitic nematodes in rhizosphere was observed as pre - and post- sowing of of lentil and found that when variety K-75 was grown, the population of Meloidogyne sp. was increased to be 950, 1000, 1550, after 30, 60 and 90 days, respectively as compared to population 450, in case of essential population before growing of crop.

A study on thirty-six farmers’ seed samples collected from eight districts to analyse the health status of Garden pea were found to possess seed germination 10-15% which is below IMSCS (i.e. 75%) and carried 40.1-46% fungal count on seeds. Aspergillus flavus, A. niger, Fusarium sp. and Pencillium sp. were fungi frequently associated with seeds which caused 24.4-55.6% reduction in germination and caused rotting of seed and seedling shoot and root.

Replant disease is a major problem of apple orchards, which is a main cash crop in TransHimalayan region. The cause of this replant problem includes both biotic and abiotic factors, such as low nutrients, phytotoxins, actinomycetes, fungal complexes and nematodes. Fungi and oomycetes belonging to the well-known root rot complex are important factor of replant problems in apple.

Cowpea (Vigna unguiculata (L.)Walp.) is a poor men’s protein source. It is one of the most ancient human food sources and an important grain legume and hay crop in many tropical and subtropical regions. It is grown in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh widely as rainfed crop. Cowpea is affected by many diseases caused by viruses, bacteria and fungi. Among the fungal diseases, the charcoal rot caused by Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi.) Goid causes significant loss in yield. M. phaseolinais a soil borne plant pathogen with a very wide host range.

Management of crop diseases by biological control is an alternative and effective approach with minimum deleterious effect on environment and human health for ecosystem stability leading to improvement in crop yields. The present study was undertaken to characterize antagonistic rhizosphere bacteria against phytopathogenic fungi i.e., Neovossia indica and Rhizoctonia solani, which cause Karnal bunt and root rot disease, respectively. Twenty two rhizobacterial isolates out of total 88 isolates obtained from wheat rhizosphere, 25% isolates inhibited the growth of both R. solani and N.

Brinjal is one of the important vegetable crop cultivated widely in India. It is susceptible to many diseases like sclerotium rot/wilt, verticillium wilt, fusarium wilt and bacterial wilt and it is being attacked by several diseases of fungi and bacteria. The collar rot/wilt disease caused by Sclerotium rolfsii is an important constraint in brinjal production. Hence, an in vivo study was conducted to evaluate the bio efficacy of antagonistic bioagents and fungicide chemicals against root rot/wilt disease of Brinjal at College of Agriculture, Bheemrayangudi during 2011–2012.

Soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill] is an important cash crop in India. It is considered as one of the main oil crop over the world. The state of Madhya Pradesh has been declared as “soybean state”. The root rot caused by Rhizoctonia solani, most pathogenic fungi of soybean crop it attack on root of plant and destroy the proper functioning of the plant to take water (xylem vessels) and other nutrients upward (phloem vessels). The studies were carried out on Department of Plant Pathology, College of Agriculture, RVSKVV, Gwalior.

Thirty fungal endophytic isolates were recovered from leaf, stem, root and inflorescence of mulberry plant and the morphological characterization was done. The antifungal potential of isolated mycoendophytes against Macrophomina phaseolina was evaluated in vitro by dual culture technique and revealed that ENF20 isolate reduced the mycelial growth by 82.22 per cent over control followed by ENF12 (80.56 per cent), ENF11 (77.78 per cent), ENF13 (76.11 per cent).

Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) is one of the most ancient oil seed crop cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical countries. Irrespective of the agro-climate conditions, sesame is liable to be infected by various pathogenic fungi. Among the fungal diseases, stem and root rot of sesame caused by Macrophomina phaseolina affects severely at all stages of crop growth. Macrophomina phaseolina is a diverse, omnipresent soil borne pathogen. The pathogen survives as sclerotia in the soil and in host tissue for varying periods.
