Colorectal cancer is one of the most common cancer and the third leading cause of death worldwide. Increased generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) is observed in many types of cancer cells. Several studies have reported that an increase in ROS production could affect the expression of proteins involved in ROS-scavenging, detoxification and drug resistance.

This thesis documents a research program in which Australian grown Danshen extracts and related bioactive compounds have been demonstrated to be effective in scavenging free radicals, namely ROS generation, in a cell free system and NADPH oxidase derived superoxide (O2-) generation in vascular tissue (rat aorta). Danshen extracts, both aqueous and ethanol, and their active compounds (Tanshinone IIA, Salvianolic Acid B and Danshensu) demonstrated anti-oxidant activity however findings exhibited stronger activity in a cell free system than in the aortic vascular tissue.

This thesis presents an evaluation of the mapping performance of a variety of SLAM algorithms that are freely available in the Robot Operating System (ROS), in conjunction with ranging data from various ranging sensors suitable for use onboard small UAS. To compare the quality of the generated maps, an existing metric was initially employed, however deficiencies noted in this metric led to the development of two new metrics. A discussion of both the existing and new map quality metrics, and the advantages and disadvantages of each, is presented as part of this thesis.

In this study, we aimed to enhance the gemcitabine apoptotic effect by EBR combined treatment in pancreatic cancer cells. EBR treatment reduced cell viability and inhibited cell proliferation in PANC-1, MIA PaCa-2, and AsPC-1 cells. Each pancreatic cancer cell gave different responses to the EBR treatment because of different aggressiveness. However, EBR induced apoptosis through increasing ROS generation, which was associated with ER stress in PANC-1 and MIA PaCa2 cells.

Cryopreservation is an efficient way to store spermatozoa and is closely associated with the quality of sperm after the freeze-thaw process. During freeze-thaw cycling, excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced, and the effects of ROS on boar sperm during cryopreservation have not been identified.

Excessive amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS), unless counterbalanced by antioxidants, can cause cellular damage under oxidative stress conditions; therefore, antioxidative defenses against ROS must be measured. With the development of nanotechnology, nanoparticles have found numerous applications in science, health, and industries. Magnetite nanoparticles (Fe3O4 :MNPs) have attracted attention because of their peroxidase-like activity.

Negative energy balance (NEB) is an imbalance between energy intake and energy requirements for lactation and body maintenance affecting high-yielding dairy cows and is of considerable economic importance due to its negative impact on fertility and health in dairy herds. It is anticipated that the cow hypothalamus experiences extensive biochemical changes during the early post partum period in an effort to re-establish metabolic homeostasis. However, there is variation in the tolerance to NEB between individual cows.

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated by NADPH oxidases known as respiratory burst oxidase homologs (RBOHs) in plants. ROS regulate various cellular processes, including the mutualistic interactions between legumes and nitrogen-fixing bacteria or arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi. Rboh is a multigene family comprising nine members (RbohA–I) in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris).

Eotaxin proteins are a potential therapeutic target in treating the peribronchial eosinophilia associated with allergic airway diseases. Since inflammation is often associated with an increased generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), oxidative stress is a mechanistically imperative factor in asthma.

Pathogen attack generates the stress full conditions which disrupts the host metabolic machinery causing an oxidative burst in plants and leads to the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). These molecules are responsible for all the metabolic changes occurring in host plant and alter the DNA, carbohydrates, lipids, sugar and protein content. In this review, we have discussed the various physiological and biochemical components that assist the plant in imparting resistance and along with the role of phytohormones viz.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the 3rd most common type of cancer worldwide. New anti-cancer agents are needed for treating late stage colorectal cancer as most of the deaths occur due to cancer metastasis. A recently developed compound, 3c has shown to have potent antitumor effect; however the mechanism underlying the antitumor effect remains unknown.

Evolvulus nummularius, is ethnomedicinally used as a medicine for hysteria, to cure burns, cuts, wounds and scropion stings. This plant has antihelminthic activity, wound healing activity, poor sedative and anticonvulsant properties. In this study, the antibacterial activity of crude methanol extract of E. nummularius was studied against three gram negative multidrug resistant strains E. aerogenes, P. aeruginosa and K. pneumoniae. This plant extract showed both bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity against all these bacterial strains. The extract was most active against E. aerogenes.

Hyptis suaveolens (L) poit commonly known as Vilayati tulsi, belongs to the family Lamiaceae. Production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) causes various diseases and cellular anomalies in human beings. Antioxidants inhibit generation of reactive species, or scavenge them, or raise the levels of endogenous antioxidant defenses. In this study the antioxidant activity of various extract of Hyptis suaveolens (L) poit leaves were evaluated using Total Antioxidant Activity Method, Nitric oxide radical scavenging activity, DPPH Scavenging method, H2O2 scavenging activity, Reducing power assay.

Inorganic Arsenic (iAs) contamination of groundwater had been a major health hazard. In West-Bengal, many areas had been found to have high level of iAs in groundwater. Chronic exposure to iAs may lead to the generation of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) and Reactive Nitrogen Species (RNS). This results in DNA damage, inflammation, impairment of repair activity, thereby culminating in carcinogenesis. Higher telomerase activity may be another manifestation of iAs exposure. This is a pilot study involving 15 subjects residing in an arsenic endemic area of West-Bengal.
