Total recovery of fermentable sugar from lignocellulosic biomass has foremost problem for liquid biofuel production. Several pretreatment methods have been tried, however use of ionic liquids is one of promising method then others, but it also has less efficiency. Hence a method was developed for pretreatment of sugarcane leaves using ionic liquid EmimAc (1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate), aqueous ammonia and a combination of both.

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) represents a promising candidate for fuel ethanol production in tropical countries because of their high availability and high biomass yield. Bioconversion of such biomass to bioethanol could be wisely managed through proper technological approach. In this work, water hyacinth was used as a substrate for bioethanol production by the use of thermophiles. Water hyacinth was pretreated with sulfuric acid (1 M) and sodium hydroxide (1M) for release of free sugars.

Bio-fuels have caught global attention in the last decade. They are renewable liquid fuels made from biological raw materials and have proved to be good substitutes for petroleum in the transportation sector. Being environment friendly, bio-fuels like ethanol and biodiesel can help us to conform to stricter emission norms.

Classical standard hydrolysis of polysaccharides with 72% sulfuric acid was modified in 2 manners. In order to avoid treatment in an autoclave at 120 °C under pressure, wood or pulp material was first swollen in cold 77% acid followed by hydrolysis steps in diluted acid solutions.
