Sai Gon – Dong Nai River

The low-lying terrain in downstream area of Sai Gon - Dong Nai river is mostly affected by natural disasters such as flooding, saltwater intrusion causing difficulties in process of socio-economic development. The project of building Vung Tau - Go Cong sea dyke with a length of 32 km was proposed to solve these problems, particularly creating a reservoir for storing water and preventing saltwater intrusion, expanding urban space, industrial parks, tourism, services, shelter for boats from the storm, reserving fresh water in the future.

The objectives of the dissertation: The objective of the dissertation is to determine the residue of pesticides OCPs in water, sediments, aquatic organisms at the estuary of the Saigon – Dong Nai and to evaluate the toxicity of the pesticides DDTs on the embryos and larvae of the Pacific oysters (Crassostrea Gigas), Fish Medaka (Oryzias latipes).

The aim of this study was to assess the impacts of the changes in upstream flow and sea level rise due to climate change on seawater intrusion in the Sai Gon and Dong Nai Rivers in Ho Chi Minh City. The HEC-RAS model was used for simulating the salinity intrusion. The results of model calibration and validation indicated that the HEC-RAS model could simulate reasonably the streamflow and salinity concentration with NSE values exceeding 0.5 for both calibration and validation periods.

The paper presents a research on impact of climate change to salinity at water intake points of supply water factories and proposes adapting solution. In the research, the change precipitation induced flow as well as the change of discharge of reservoirs flow according to climate change scenarios are calculated by NAM and regulation of reservoirs models.

In recent decades, the increasing in greenhouse gas emission has caused global warming leading to many adverse changes of the environment especially the sea level rise and the hydrological regime. The Dong Nai river basin having the downstream part below the sea level is among the most vulnerable basins to climate change. Recents studies showed that the sea level in the downstream of Sai Gon - Dong Nai river basin is rising. Many cities downstream of the basin especially Ho Chi Minh city are being flooded in flow tides which seriously affect the socioeconomic development.
