Satellite repeats

Satellite DNAs (satDNAs) are organized in repetitions directly contiguous to one another, forming long arrays and composing a large portion of eukaryote genomes. These sequences evolve according to the concerted evolution model, and homogenization of repeats is observed at the intragenomic level.

Satellite DNA sequences are the most abundant components of heterochromatin and are repeated in tandem hundreds to thousands of times in the genome. However, the number of repeats of a specific satellite family can vary even between the genomes of related species or populations.

Paradoxically, centromeres are known both for their characteristic repeat sequences (satellite DNA) and for being epigenetically defined. Maize (Zea mays mays) is an attractive model for studying centromere positioning because many of its large (~2 Mb) centromeres are not dominated by satellite DNA.

Our results indicate that, in addition to previously reported L1 elements, various LTR and DNA transposons, as well as members of the classical satellites including HSAT5 and α-satellites (ALR/Alpha), are expressed at higher levels in late senescence. Moreover, we revealed finer links between the expression levels of repeats with the genes located near them and known to be involved in cell cycle and senescence. Noncoding elements reported here provide a new perspective to be explored in further experimental studies.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the deadliest cancers. Research on HCC so far primarily focused on genes and provided limited information on genomic repeats, which constitute more than half of the human genome and contribute to genomic stability. In line with this, repeat dysregulation was significantly shown to be pathological in various cancers and other diseases. In this study, we aimed to determine the full repeat expression profile of HCC for the first time.

Spermatozoa have a remarkable epigenome in line with their degree of specialization, their unique nature and different requirements for successful fertilization. Accordingly, perturbations in the establishment of DNA methylation patterns during male germ cell differentiation have been associated with infertility in several species. While bull semen is widely used in artificial insemination, the literature describing DNA methylation in bull spermatozoa is still scarce.

The last decade witnessed a number of genome-wide studies on human pre-implantation, which mostly focused on genes and provided only limited information on repeats, excluding the satellites.

This study aimed to evaluate the genetic diversity and identify potato cultivars by SSR markers. The genomic DNA of 50 potato cultivars was amplified with nineteen Simple Sequence Repeats (SSRs) primers. Out of nineteen primers only fifteen primers were amplified and gave polymorphic bands.

Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) is an important crop of temperate climate zones, which provides nearly 30 % of the world’s annual sugar needs. From the total genome size of 758 Mb, only 567 Mb were incorporated in the recently published genome sequence, due to the fact that regions with high repetitive DNA contents (e.g. satellite DNAs) are only partially included.

The purpose of this document is to describe the functionality and performance parameters for each GEOSAR instrument. The document is intended to be used to ensure the necessary compatibility for the 406 MHz beacon to satellite uplink and compatibility for the satellite to geostationary local user terminal (GEOLUT) downlink. The document is not intended for use as a specification for procurement of hardware for GEOSAR satellite repeaters.
