This article examines the electrical and optical characteristics of an MPPC under loosely controlled environmental conditions. We also report a measurement of the light yield captured by the MPPC when a cosmic ray passes through the plastic scintillator, demonstrating that such a setup is suitable as a simple, cost-effective tabletop cosmic ray detector for educational and research purposes.

Radiation portal monitors (RPMs) are now stationed at strategic areas (airports, ports, etc.) to identify the illegal transportation of radioactive sources and nuclear items. RPMs are typically fitted with a PVT detector with a high recording efficiency. Radioisotope identification from the gamma spectrum acquired on this detector is normally not regarded due to the low resolution.

The sensitivity of an active fast neutron assay system for the measurement of 235U enrichment in small samples of low-enriched triuranium octoxide (U3O8) is described. The system comprises four organic liquid scintillation detectors in a polyethylene container in which a stimulating americium-lithium neutron source is placed below the sample to be interrogated.

One of the newest developments within radiotherapy is the integration of Magnetic Resonance (MR) scanners and Megavoltage X-rays from linear accelerators into the new MR-Linacs. Some MR-Linacs are able to perform gated treatments based on continuously acquired 2D MR images taken during dose delivery, which has the potential to reduce margins required for tumor coverage.

The ability discrimination of neutrons/gamma-rays of the detector was evaluated by the charge comparison (CC) method using an 252Cf source. The total efficiencies when measured on 22Na, 137Cs, 60Co and 252Cf sources were obtained 17.8%, 3.9%, 9.8% and 14.8%, respectively. The Figure of Merit (FoM) values of CC method were 0.4–1.55 for the range of energy 50–1000 keVee (keV electron equivalent).

In this study, we compared a PCD and conventional scintillation detector with respect to the energy windows (5%, 10%, 15%, and 20%) using a 99mTc gamma source with a Geant4 Application for Tomography Emission simulation tool. The gamma camera systems used in this work are a CZT PCD and NaI(Tl) conventional scintillation detector with a 1-mm thickness. According to the results, although the IU and DU results were improved with the energy window, the SF and CNR results deteriorated with the energy window.

This paper presents a neutron detector configuration using EJ-301 scintillation liquid, a R9420 photomultiplier and a homemade preamplifier. The detector qualities which include the energy linearity, efficiency response and neutron/gamma discrimination are guaranteed for neutron detection in the energy range from 0 to 3000 keVee. Regarding the neutron/gamma discrimination capability, four pulse shape discrimination (PSD) methods which are the threshold crossing time (TCT).

The mean absolute error was measured less than 2.5 and 5.5. The correlation coefficient was calculated 0.998 and 0.984, respectively. Also, the ANN technique was confirmed by leave-one-out (LOO) method with 1% error. These results presented the superiority of the ANN method in comparison with NLR and the other methods. The technique and set up used are simpler and faster than other the previous position sensitive detectors. Thus, the time, cost and shielding and electronics requirements are minimized and optimized.

This paper presented the method of determining the radioactivity of 40K, 226Ra and 232Th in soil samples by gamma-ray spectrometerusing NaI (Tl) scintillation detector. The radioactivity of each isotope is calculated based on the net count rate in the energy window characteristics for the 40K, 226Ra and 232Th radioisotopes respectively.

In this study, we investigate in the use of software-based GNSS receiver to detect ionospheric scintillation in Vietnam. Ionospheric scintillation is well-known for its bad effect on the precision of GNSS receivers. Vietnam locates at a low-lattitude region which is one of the most-affected region if any scintillation occurs. Therefore, it is important to be able detect and store the data of the receiver during scintillation periods for later analysis and mitigation.

The water samples were taken from the streams, natural tap and thermal water intakes localized in the studied deposit and surrounding region. The 238U, 234U, 228Ra, 226Ra concentrations in the water samples were prepared by the adequate radiochemical procedures and measured using an alpha spectrometer coupled with silicon semiconductor detector and a/b liquid scintillation counter. In the stream water, the concentrations of both 226Ra and 228Ra vary from 100 to above 300 mBq/L, while in the natural tap and thermal waters they amount to tens mBq/L.

The article describes a gamma ray spectrometer protected by a lead shield (Model 747E Canberra lead shield) and an active shield made of an 80 cm × 80 cm × 3 cm plastic scintillator plate in anticoincidence on top of the lead shield.
