Sculptural installation

Within the urban landscape, the tempo of destruction and redevelopment of our built environment reveals a palimpsest of change. The abandonment of these sites could go unnoticed, often a fleeting moment before destruction, with the next structure then re-cloaking the land. This research project locates itself spatially and conceptually within this pause or transitional state of select sites. It utilises this brief period of time to consider how these sites can offer poetic information and new readings as creative practice, despite their impending obsolescence.

This practice-led research project considers human agency in relation to matter and materialism. Seeking to unlearn human assertions of agency as dominant, this project fosters relational and collaborative exchanges with matter that manifest as installations and sculptural interventions. Informed by new materialist and posthuman frameworks, it recognises that material hierarchies are held in place by what we choose to prioritise in human worlds.

In Janet Zweig’s Impersonator (2002), installed in the Instructional Technology Center of Santa Fe Community College, the author may not be dead, but she is unequivocally missing in action. Who is the impersonator, who is she dramatizing, and what is her relationship to an author? Where does the artist enter and exit in this discursive, possibly disturbing scenario? There is a phantom author of texts, potentially multiple, unidentified impersonators, and someone who may have defaulted on the commonly accepted role of the artist as creator and maker.

When evaluating competitive bids, remember that cost should never be the sole determin- ing factor. Automatically contracting with the lowest bidder without considering other criteria is one of the most frequent mistakes organizations make when selecting conservators. Give the highest priority to subjective criteria such as experience, qualifications, and pro- posed treatment methods. If the conservation price tag is daunting, you may have to revise your expectations. Never compromise on the conservator’s qualifications, experience, or quality of work.

Dadang Christanto is a graduate of the Indonesia Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta. Since 1999, he has taught at the School of Art and Design, University of the Northern Territory. His art explores social and political issues in a wide range of media, including painting, drawing, performance, sculpture and installation. The sunflashes on the encrusted branches of this soaring sculpture suggest the wing movements of roosting metal birds. But the blade shapes are also like hands, lifted heavenwards by the dead tree so that they can touch the sky.
