Mastitis is the most common disease in dairy cattle and the costliest for the dairy farming industry, as it lowers milk yield and quality. Mastitis occurs as a result of interactions between microorganisms and the individual genetic predispositions of each animal.

Gonadal sex differentiation proceeds by the interplay of various genes including the transcription factors and secretory factors in a complex network. Dmrt1 and Sox9 were considered to be the essential genes involved in the testicular differentiation in mammals, birds, reptiles, and fishes. Here, we have successfully isolated and characterized cDNAs encoding the Rana chensinensis orthologs of Dmrt1 and Sox9, and we have determined patterns of expression during gonadal differentiation and adult tissues.

Our results indicate that, in addition to previously reported L1 elements, various LTR and DNA transposons, as well as members of the classical satellites including HSAT5 and α-satellites (ALR/Alpha), are expressed at higher levels in late senescence. Moreover, we revealed finer links between the expression levels of repeats with the genes located near them and known to be involved in cell cycle and senescence. Noncoding elements reported here provide a new perspective to be explored in further experimental studies.

In the present study, attempts were made to produce biologically active recombinant mouse hephaestin as a secretory form tagged with green fluorescent protein (GFP), Hpsec-GFP. Plasmid expressing Hpsec-GFP was constructed and transfected into COS and CHO cells. The GFP aided the monitoring expression in real time to select the best conditions to maximise expression and provided a tag for purifying and analysing Hpsec-GFP. The protein had detectable oxidase activity as shown by in-gel and solution-based assays.

Secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI) is a protein with anti-protease and antimicrobial properties that is constitutively secreted from the airway epithelium. The importance of maintaining a balance between proteases and anti-proteases, and robust innate defence mechanisms in the airways, is exemplified by inflammatory lung conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cystic fibrosis (CF).

Secretoglobin (SCGB) 3A2, a cytokine-like secretory protein of small molecular weight, is predominantly expressed in airway epithelial cells. While SCGB3A2 is known to have anti-inflammatory, growth factor, and anti-fibrotic activities, whether SCGB3A2 has any other roles, particularly in lung homeostasis and disease has not been demonstrated in vivo. The aim of this study was to address these questions in mice.

The objectives of this study were to (1) to quantify CD45+ Collagen-1+ fibrocytes and a novel epithelial-like population of bone marrow-derived cells, which express Clara Cell Secretory Protein, in patients at the time of lung transplant and (2) to evaluate mediators that may act to recruit these cells during injury.

Fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) is a multifunctional protein that plays an important role in the regulation of proliferation, differentiation and migration of a variety of cells. The recombinant human FGF-2 (rhFGF-2) is currently used in stem cell culture, medicine and cosmetic products. In this study, we aim to produce secreted rhFGF-2 protein from a Pichia pastoris strain containing multiple copies of the fgf-2 gene to eliminate the disadvantages of intracellular expression systems

Retinoid signalling is crucial to vertebrate embryonic development. The Cyp26B1 is one of the key catabolic enzymes, involved in the inactivation of all-trans retinoic acid and helps in the maintaining of retinoic acid availability for retinoid signalling. In the present study, for the first time, we cloned and characterized the full coding sequence of Cyp26B1 gene in Clarias magur. The full-length cDNA sequence of Cyp26B1 gene was 1782 bp (ORF 1533 bp) encoding 511 amino acids. Signal peptide analysis revealed that Cyp26B1 is a secretory protein as reported in other vertebrates.

Zika virus (ZIKV) infection has become a major public health problem all around the world. Early diagnosis of Zika infection is important for better management of the disease. Non-structural protein 1 (NS1) is a potential biomarker for ZIKV infections. The purpose of this study was to produce the ZIKV NS1 protein for establishing serological diagnostic methods for ZIKV.

Oxidative stress plays pivotal roles in the progression of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) through cell signaling related closely to cancer growth. We previously reported that peroxiredoxin 4 (PRDX4), a secretory-type antioxidant enzyme, can protect against the development of various diseases, including potential malignancies.

Group IID secretory phospholipase A2 (sPLA2-IID), a heparin-binding sPLA2 that is closely related to sPLA2-IIA, augments stimulus-induced cellular arachidonate release in a manner similar to sPLA2-IIA. Here we identified the residues of sPLA2-IID that are responsible for heparanoid binding, are and therefore essential for cellular function.

To gain better insight into the insulin secretory activity of fetalbcells in response to glucose, the expression of glucose transporter 2 (GLUT-2), glucokinase and mitochondrial glycerol phosphate dehydrogenase (mGDH) were studied. Expression ofGLUT-2mRNA and protein in pancreatic islets and liver was signi®cantly lower in fetal and suckling rats than in adult rats.

Schistosomes are parasitic flatworms that infect millions of people in (sub)tropical areas around the world. Glycoconjugates of schistosomes play a critical role in the interaction of the different developmental stages of the parasite with the host. In particular, glycosylated components of the eggs produced by the adult worm pairs living in the bloodstream are strongly immunogenic.
