Ebook "Geology and mineral resources of Nigeria (Lecture notes in Earth sciences, Volume 120)" is divided into three parts. Part 1 discusses the geology of the crystalline rocks and their regional distribution while the sedimentary basins constitute the subject of Part 2. Part 3 takes the mineral resources of Nigeria one on one, their geological environment, mode of occurrence, localities and where possible the reserves estimation.

In this study, we aimed to highlight the major lineaments of the DSB by interpreting gravity data using advanced edge detection filters based on various combinations of the horizontal and vertical gradients of the field, namely the total horizontal gradient (THG), analytical signal (AS), theta map (TM), gradient amplitude of the vertical derivative (THG_VD), the tilt angle of the total horizontal gradient amplitude (TAHG) and a novel edge detector based on the soft sign function (SF).

Northern Song Hong Tertiary Sedimentary basin is a classic case study of a pull-apart basin in southeast Asia, whose formation was controlled by the India-Eurasia collision, sinistral and dextral strike-slip motion of the Ailao Shan-Red River Shear Zone and Opening of the East Vietnam Sea during the Cenozoic. Unlike the central and southern parts of the basin, the northern Song Hong Basin experienced a very strong inversion during the Late Miocene.

This study used the 2D and 3D normalized total gradient (NTG) method of gravity anomalies to detect the gravity anomalies caused by oil-gas reservoirs. The NTG of gravity anomalies can be associated with known oil-gas reservoirs, and most of them seem to be a good coincidence with the reservoirs.

A belt of Upper Eocene–Lower Oligocene marine sedimentary rocks extends from Kıyıköy on the Black Sea coast to Pınarhisar in the Thrace Basin, suggesting a marine connection between the Black Sea and the Thrace Basin during this period. The Cenozoic succession of this marine corridor was studied in the vicinity of Kıyıköy along two measured stratigraphic sections.

The Sivas Basin is located in the eastern part of the central Anatolia. In this study, aeromagnetic data in the basin and surrounding area are processed and anomalies are interpreted to determine the approximate locations of the causative bodies and reveal their relationship with the tectonic trends. The sedimentary basin is surrounded by strong magnetic anomalies from the south, east, and northeast. The most apparent anomalies are observed in the E-NE of Zara, SW of Divriği, and north of Kangal.

Knowledge of the Late Paleozoic sedimentary history of the northern Gondwana shelf is advanced by new data from the Şort Dere section (Hakkari Basin). Early Carboniferous myalinid bivalves from the Middle East are reported here for the first time. The pre-Permian basement of the Hakkari Basin consists of a Lower Carboniferous sedimentary sequence including the Köprülü and Belek formations. The Köprülü Formation has yielded rich assemblages of vertebrates and invertebrates. Hitherto myalinid bivalves were unknown from this formation.

This study describes the sedimentary facies and depositional architectures of Gilbert-type and shoal-water delta deposits developed on opposed margins of the extensional fluvio-lacustrine Yalvaç Basin during the late Cenozoic. The roles of syndepositional tectonism, basin dynamics, and hinterland morphology on the development of different delta types are assessed. This asymmetric trough initially opened as an intramontane molasse basin to the southwest of the Sultandağları massif.

Lecture Geotechnical engineering: Chapter 2 - Exploration. After completing this section, you will understand the knowledge about more recent years the increasing consumption of steel, and rising costs have prompted a search for large high- grade deposits of iron ore that can be mined cheaply by open-pit methods

The data also indicate that sedimentary protoliths of the Nam Co Complex were deposited in a convergent - related basin along the southwestern margin of the South China Craton during the Neoproterozoic. Combined with the similarities of the detrital zircon age between western Cathaysia, Indochina, East Antarctica and East India, it is proved that the South China Craton was situated at the margin of the Rodinia Supercontinent and in close proximity to the Indochina, East Antarctica and East India.

Benxi area, Northeastern China, is the main distribution area of Archean BIF-hosted iron deposits in China. I n this area, Nanfen iron deposit is well known as the largest open-pit iron deposit not only in China but also in Asia. So far, the tectonic nature during Archean BIF formation period in Benxi area has been long disputed and the tectonic setting of Nanfen BIF had not been found. In this study, the geochemical characters of chlorite amphibolites closely associated with BIF have been investigated for the tectonic environment of Nanfen BIF.

Southeast Asia has 11 countries: Brunei, Cambodia, East Timor, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. Southeast Asia is considered one of the most active economic development regions in the world, with high demand for energy development, cultural diversity, and language. These countries and Vietnam have good relationships in diplomacy and cooperation and in other fields; therefore, it is very convenient for Vietnam to invest in oil and gas exploration and exploitation in the region.

This paper presents the author’s integrated regional studies during the last decade. The main purpose is to present an overall understanding of the geological structure, sedimentary basins and hydrocarbon systems of the whole Western Black Sea Zone (WBSZ). Th is study is based on original data from boreholes, seismic and gravity-magnetic surveys and hydrocarbon accumulations.

Sedimentary properties of the middle−upper eocene formations in Çardak, Burdur and İncesu, SW Turkey
The integration of sedimentological, palynological and palaeontological data in three diff erent outcrops in SW Turkey provides a clearer understanding of the palaeoenvironments in an area between the Çardak-Dazkırı Basin and the Isparta region during the Middle–Late Eocene. In this study, the Çardak-Dazkırı (Başçeşme Formation), Burdur (Varsakyayla Formation) and Isparta (Kayıköy Formation) areas have been studied for facies and facies associations.

The late Cenozoic extensional deformation formed several NE-trending fluvio-lacustrine basins in SW Anatolia, filled by alluvial, fluvial and lacustrine deposits. Among them, the Acıgöl basin , is notable for its tectono-sedimentary development of a prominent shallow-perennial playa-lake setting. The basin initially subsided to receive coarse-clastic alluvial deposits, merging into fluvial systems and central shallow lakes.

The Oligocene-Miocene Asmari Formation was deposited in a carbonate ramp setting at the margin of the Zagros Basin in south-western Iran. The subsurface sedimentary successions of the Asmari Formation have been studied using cores from the Rag-eSafid oil field, in order to determinate their microfacies and sedimentary palaeoenvironments.

The Tuz Gölü Basin is the largest sedimentary depression located at the center of the Central Anatolian Plateau, an extensive, low-relief region with elevations of ca. 1 km located between the Pontide and Tauride mountains. Presently, the basin morphology and sedimentation processes are mainly controlled by the extensional Tuz Gölü Fault Zone in the east and the transtensional İnönü– Eskişehir Fault System in the west.

We present a new 3D geologic model for the architecture and Cenozoic tectonic evolution of the Tuz Gölü Basin, a major sedimentary basin in the Central Anatolian orogenic plateau. This model is grounded on 7 depth-converted seismic reflection profiles in combination with the analysis of backstripped subsidence curves, isochore maps, and a palinspastically restored cross-section. Two stages of basin formation are detected during Cenozoic times.

Major, trace, and rare earth element (REE) studies have been conducted on the Proterozoic clastic rocks of the Kerur Formation of the Kaladgi-Badami Basin, South India, to determine their paleoweathering conditions and provenance characteristics. Geochemically, these sedimentary rocks are classified as quartz arenite, arkose, litharenite, and sublitharenite.
